Abnormal bowel movements are an umbrella term for signifying several signs that is not regular or ordinary. Considering the fact that the diet plan and lifestyle habits differ from one person to another, any bowel movement sign that is not ordinary for the individual is considered abnormal. This problem is equally observed amongst children and adults, though younger ones are more susceptible to it than the older people.

Nature

While discussing more about the frequency of bowel movements, the number ranging from three times daily to three times a week is considered normal. To be more precise, an individual passing stools more than thrice a day and that too watery indicate a diarrhea condition. On the contrary, less number of bowel movements or thrice a week, while passing hardened stools is a symptom of constipation.
Usually, the first thing that comes to everyone's mind about abnormal bowel movement problems is constipation and/or diarrhea. While constipation results in painful bowel movements along with excess gas formation, diarrhea leads to frequent passing of watery stool.
And normal bowel movements are those wherein the stools are able to pass out without straining, and are soft and similar to the shape and size of a sausage. Very thin or narrow stools may be a sign of a digestive health problem or colon cancer. Nevertheless, some people tend to have softer or hard bowel movements.
In terms of the normal color, the stool should be brownish-yellow, brown, or golden brown. Sudden change in the color, size, shape, consistence, and frequency of stool indicates an abnormal condition. Likewise, a bloody bowel movement is a common symptom of hemorrhoids.
