Brain Fog Treatment

Chandramita Bora
Brain fog is a term used for the condition that is characterized by mental confusion or a lack of mental clarity. This condition is however, not recognized as a disease in conventional medicine. The treatment of this condition can vary considerably depending on the underlying causes.
Brain fog or mental fog is a common complaint, in spite of the fact that it has not been recognized as a diagnosed disease within the realm of conventional medicine. It is usually defined as 'cognitive dysfunction' or an unusually poor mental condition.
The affected individuals usually experience lack of mental clarity, confusion or an inability to think clearly, lack of attention to details, and an inability to concentrate. This condition can be observed in both children and adults.

Causes and Symptoms of Brain Fog

It can be associated with several physical, and mental or psychiatric conditions, of which the most common causes are, fatigue, stress, and insomnia.
Other causes include, nutritional deficiencies (especially a deficiency of vitamin B12), reduced flow of blood to the brain due to circulatory problems, heavy metal toxicity, allergies and food intolerance, adrenal exhaustion, thyroid problems, and depression.
It can also be associated with chronic fatigue syndrome, leaky gut syndrome, candidiasis, chronic viral infections, excessive intake of caffeine, and bowel toxicity, either due to the improper digestion of food or an inability to expel toxins from the body due to constipation.
Apart from these, one can get fibromyalgia brain fog, as fibromyalgia can cause the loss of mental clarity along with muscle pain.
Women can sometimes get this problem during menopause due to hormonal fluctuations in the body. Many times, it can also be experienced as a side effect of certain medications. The following are the most common symptoms that can be experienced by the affected individuals:
  • Loss of mental clarity
  • Decreased attention and concentration
  • Lack of spatial awareness
  • Inability to think clearly
  • Forgetfulness
  • Mild depression and anxiety

Brain Fog Cure

If it is associated with a medical condition like thyroid disorder or adrenal exhaustion, then appropriate treatment options are available that can address these conditions, and thus cure brain fog. For example, brain fog associated with thyroid problems can be treated with thyroid medications.
On the other hand, dietary and lifestyle modifications can help treat the condition, if it is caused by nutritional deficiencies and insomnia. A balanced diet, adequate sleep, and regular exercise are all that are required in most of the cases.
As far as the diet is concerned, a healthy and balanced diet that includes protein-rich foods, complex carbohydrates, and omega-3 essential fatty acids can provide considerable relief. Proteins are made up of amino acids, which are essential for the synthesis of several important neurotransmitters.
Neurotransmitters are required for the transmission of nerve impulses and for the proper functioning of the brain. Similarly, carbohydrates, essential fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals are equally important for the smooth functioning of all the body systems, including the nervous system or the brain.
These nutrients can be found in sufficient amounts in green vegetables, fresh fruits, cereals, legumes, and whole grains. However, it is equally important to reduce or limit the consumption of simple and refined carbohydrates, caffeine or caffeinated beverages, alcohol, processed and junk food, and hydrogenated and partially hydrogenated oil and trans fats.
Along with following a balanced diet, adequate rest or sleep is also important to refresh and rejuvenate your body and mind. Though sleep requirements can vary from person to person, it is usually considered that adult individuals need about 7 to 8 hours of sleep in the night.
People experiencing brain fog should also exercise or do physical activity on a regular basis. Regular physical activity can strengthen the body and the mind, and help you stay healthy. For stress management, you can try some stress relief techniques like meditation and yoga.
You can also try certain herbal remedies, like green tea, ginseng, and cilantro for treating this problem. However, if the condition does not clear up even after adopting a healthy lifestyle, and if it is affecting your job, work, or your day-to-day activities, then talk to your physician as soon as possible.
This type of brain fog may be associated with a medical condition. Your physician can help evaluate the condition, and suggest the appropriate medications and therapies for treating the condition.
