Being the largest organ of the body that is exposed to the allergens and irritants present in the environment, the skin often gets affected. Even harsh weather can cause damage to the skin, bringing about a change in its color and texture.
The skin can also get inflamed on being exposed to certain chemicals that are present in cosmetic products. The color of the bump and the accompanying symptoms can help a dermatologist identify the underlying cause of this skin condition. Thereafter, a suitable treatment can be recommended.

Common Contributing Factors

The change in color or texture of skin could be indicative of:
  • Hives, known as urticaria, is an allergic reaction to a food item or drug, which the immune system considers to be a threat. It is characterized by the development of red, itchy welts on the skin that have red margins and a pale center. The itchy bumps occur due to release of histamines.
  • Acne is common skin condition that affects adolescents and young adults. Our skin is covered with hair follicles or pores that contain sebaceous glands. These glands are responsible for producing sebum, which is the oil that moistens our hair and skin.
Acne occurs due to the excessive production of sebum. When the pores get clogged with sebum and dead skin cells, it provides an environment for bacteria to grow. This gives rise to the formation of pimples.
  • Rosacea is a skin condition that is characterized by inflamed skin on the forehead, cheeks, nose, and chin. The affected person may develop red bumps or small cysts.
The bumps might be filled with pus. The symptoms tend to come and go. Though the exact cause of rosacea is not known, it is believed that increased blood flow to the surface of the skin causes skin eruptions along with flushing and facial redness.
  • Young children affected by eczema also develop itchy eruptions. This inflammatory skin condition causes red, dry, cracked, and itchy skin or pimple-like eruptions.
  • Milia, which refers to keratin-filled cysts or protein deposits under the skin, is responsible for white bumps on the skin. Primary milia that might be seen in infants is caused due to undeveloped or partially developed oil glands. These bumps might clear up on their own. At times, these spots could develop in the event of trauma to the skin.

Treatment

A visit to the dermatologist is required to ascertain the nature of these bumps. In case of skin disorders such as acne, eczema, rosacea, etc., the dermatologist might prescribe topical steroids, medicated emollients, antibiotics, etc. Antihistamines might be needed to treat hives or any allergic reaction.
If rashes are caused due to an allergic reaction, you need to be sure that there is no further contact with the allergen. Be careful while selecting cosmetic products. If you have a very sensitive skin, it would be better to use products prescribed by the dermatologist. You must never scratch over the affected skin, as that may increase the risk of secondary bacterial infections.
If you develop a rash on using a particular cosmetic product, discontinue its use. The best way to prevent irritant or allergic contact dermatitis is to avoid coming in contact with irritants or allergens. Since infections and inflammatory conditions may cause such eruptions, it would be best to consult a dermatologist for proper diagnosis and treatment.
