Dental braces are also used to adjust a misaligned jaw, over bites, and under bites. You may find several types of orthodontic braces to choose from, like metal, ceramic or even gold-plated ones.

Ceramic Braces

As the name suggests, ceramic braces are made of ceramic or sometimes even plastic. As the color of these braces is like the natural color of the teeth, they are less noticeable.
Sometimes, people may not even notice that you are wearing braces. But, one should be aware that drinking too much coffee, curry, wine, or even smoking can cause the ceramic braces to discolor. It takes a lot of time to complete the procedure and treatment for these braces.

Metal Braces

Metal braces are the oldest type and have been used for many years to straighten teeth. They are made of stainless steel or even in combination of nickel titanium.
Earlier, metal braces were larger and chunky in size. But, nowadays, you may find them in smaller and modern versions which do not cause irritation to the lips. You can also go for metal braces with colored elastics around them.

Comparing Ceramic Braces and Metal Braces

▸ The biggest advantage of ceramic braces over metal braces is that they do not cause stains on the teeth. Metal braces are notorious for causing stains on the surface of the teeth, and hence, are avoided by most of the people.
▸ Although braces are commonly used by children and teenagers, sometimes, adults may have a need to wear braces. Ceramic braces are often opted by adults for their appearance. As they are available in the natural color of the teeth, they can give a subtle appearance, and hence, are very convenient than metal braces.
▸ Although metal braces are the cheapest of the lot. Ceramic braces, on the other hand, cost a lot more. At the same time, if the procedure lasts for a longer time, the cost can go up more than initially stated.
▸ Metal braces are a lot stronger than ceramic ones. One of the another disadvantages of ceramic braces is that as they are brittle, they have higher tendency to break or chip. Specially if these braces crack, you will have to spend additional amount of money. Similarly, those made of plastic have a tendency to wear out with quickly.
▸ Metal braces are definitely more efficient than their ceramic counterparts. Although they may not be attractive, they help in aligning the teeth quickly. As they are sturdy, metal braces can also be worn by anyone, for any amount of time, whereas ceramic ones have certain limitations. For e.g., it is not recommended for sportsmen to wear ceramic braces.
