Chronic Leukopenia

A recurrent problematic illness that results in a low white blood cell (WBC) count is known as chronic leukopenia. Learn about the causes, symptoms, treatment, and prevention methods of this health issue.

Leukopenia is a condition in which the number of WBCs (leukocytes) are low, which diminishes the immune system's ability to fight infections. Neutrophil granulocytes (a decrease in this would result in a subtype condition of leukopenia known as neutropenia) are the most abundant type of WBCs, and protect the body against harmful microorganisms.
The role of leukocytes, which are the disease-fighting cells present in one's blood stream, is to fight infections and other harmful agents. When these defense elements deplete, the body becomes a nesting ground for bacteria and other infectious bodies. Both internal and external factors are responsible for decreasing the WBC count.
When the body becomes susceptible to germs and bacteria, one easily develops illnesses or infections. It is important to keep one's immunity under check, because it is the main powerhouse that keeps the body healthy and strong. Without adequate strength in the main supporting system, a person becomes prone to any kind of illness or disease. This is because a weak immune system cannot defend itself.

Probable Causes

  • A disease that is causing damage to the bone marrow
  • Certain drugs that can destroy WBCs
  • HIV/AIDS
  • Myelofibrosis
  • Leukemia
  • Aplastic anemia
  • Cancer
  • Infections that are too vigorous in nature for the system to fight off
  • Kostmann syndrome
  • Autoimmune disorders
  • Chemotherapy
  • Radiation therapy
  • Parasitic diseases
  • Congenital disorders
  • Reaction because of the use of diuretics
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Hyperthyroidism
  • Lupus
  • Hypersplenism
  • Myelodysplastic syndrome
  • Vitamin deficiency
  • Myelokathexis

Symptoms Observed

It is wise to first identify the symptoms of leukopenia before coming to a hasty conclusion. A consultation will then determine whether you suffer from this problem or not. If you do, the doctor will suggest necessary diagnostic tests and subsequent treatment. Some commonly observed indicants are:
  • High fever
  • Cuts and scratches take time to heal
  • Diarrhea
  • Sinus infections
  • Recurrent flu or cold
  • Lung infections (fluid is expelled upon coughing)
  • Headaches
  • Mouth/canker sores
  • Stomach cramps
  • Swelling or reddening around wounds along with pus formation
  • Urinary tract infection
  • Cramping
  • Sore gums
  • Rectal bleeding
  • Sore throat
  • Sneezing continuously

Treatment Options

When the signs of this illness become overwhelming, it is time to seek medical help and get the right kind of treatment to fight against infections and diseases.
✔ Granulocyte transfusions are administered along with growth factors, and these are given before one undergoes radiation or chemotherapy to increase the count of WBCs. These can be given otherwise also when the WBC count is too low.
The cytokines present in these growth factors stimulate the bone marrow to produce more leukocytes. The two kinds of growth factors commonly available for patients are Neulasta and Neupogen.
Corticosteroid therapy and intravenous immunoglobulin are other options given to patients. Those who are experiencing infections are given antifungal medications or antibiotics to help the system fight back.

Prevention Measures

Certain lifestyle changes can help in keeping this problem at bay.
  • It is important not to give in to stressful moments. Stay calm and have a positive outlook towards life.
  • Avoid the intake of sugary edibles, since it decreases strength of WBCs.
  • Regular exercising helps in boosting immune system. Surprisingly, vegetable oils, like safflower, corn, and sunflower hinder the ability of the immune system.
  • Being overweight can seriously damage the immune system, since the body loses the ability to fight infections in an obese state.
Leukopenia is a problem that can arise even after following strict preventive measures, because you may never know which other lifestyle habits end up damaging the health. It is important to address the signs of this illness and have it checked out immediately to prevent it from progressing further.
