Colon spasms can truly spoil your day or days depending on how long they last. One of the most important causes of colon spasms is irritable bowel syndrome also known as IBS, which is one of the most common digestive disorders. It is generally characterized by either constipation or diarrhea. Some additional symptoms may include cramps in stomach, bloating, or change and disruption in bowel habits of an individual. Symptoms of Colon Spasms

Colon spasm symptoms can greatly differ from person to person with different intensity but some of the common symptoms always remain the same. They are as following.

Abdominal Cramps

Abdominal cramps are one of the most common reasons of colon spasms. When abdominal muscles are contracted leading to colon spasm, it can trigger a severe pain in the stomach area where spasm has occurred. Such abdominal pain caused by the colon spasm is more gassy and colicky in nature. And it can suddenly be felt sharply at any time and may last for few seconds or minutes.

Changes in Bowel Movements

It is one of the most striking colon spasm symptom that can help one diagnose the colon spasm in the earlier stage. An individual's bowel habit may get altered. For example, a person may feel the urge to defecate at unusual timings, unlike earlier. In some cases, some people may suffer from excessive hard stools or loose stools.

Diarrhea or Constipation

Diarrhea and constipation are the next stages of the previous symptom. For example, a person suffering from hard stools may suffer from constipation within the next few days and on the other hand, a person suffering from loose stools may experience diarrhea. So, depending on the onset of the spasm and eating habits of an individual, constipation or diarrhea may be the result.

Fullness and Bloating

Fullness and bloating can also be experienced by a person suffering from colon spasms. A person may feel that his or her clothes are tighter and may feel suffocated in them. The bloating and fullness can be associated with flatulence and rumbling noises in the stomach. Apart from this, some people also suffer from nausea and vomiting while suffering from colon spasm.
These were some of the symptoms of colon spasm. Apart from this, urgency to defecate, difficulty in opening the bowels, feeling of incomplete defecation, and incontinence, etc. are some of the other colon spasm causes. Some people also experience pain in the lower back passage while defecation. Many people also complain of excessive straining to pass the stools which can be tiresome and annoying.
By taking certain medicines and altering the eating habits a person may get some relief from colon spasm symptoms. Those suffering from constipation or hard stools should drink lots of water and include various fruits and vegetables in the daily diet. Doctors generally advise to go for a high fiber diet in order to ease the constipation.
On the other hand, people suffering from diarrhea are asked to follow a balanced diet along with lots of water. They are advised to stay away from junk food and fried foods, etc. In severe cases, patients are prescribed drugs and medicines that can ease the pain and swelling related to colon spasm and bring it back to the normal functioning.
