Cysts on face can be described as small round-shaped lumps felt under the facial skin. These sacs of cells are filled with an oily substance called keratin, which has a foul odor. They can grow anywhere on the face and neck region. They are mainly formed because of swelling in the hair follicles.
Sometimes, they may occur due to skin trauma as well. The usual color of the facial cyst is white or yellow; however, those people who have dark skin color may get pigmented cysts.
At the center of the cyst, you may find a tiny blackhead. Usually, cysts are harmless and do not cause any pain; however, if they get infected, then they are really painful. When the infection is severe, then they are warm to the touch. Other accompanying symptoms of the infection is swelling, reddening, and irritation of the cyst and its surrounding areas.

Causes

Cysts that appear on face tend to grow very slowly. There are several factors that can be responsible for causing cysts to grow on the face. When an excess amount of sebum is released by the sebaceous glands, the oil gets accumulated inside the facial skin pores and blocks the skin cells. This results in the formation of cysts. If the hair follicles get damaged by injuries, then the site may get cyst growth.
Hormonal change is the major factor due to which teenagers tend to get cysts on their facial skin. Excessive stress and environmental pollution can also be responsible for growth of cysts. In some people, the problem could be hereditary.
Many women get cysts as a result of the use of wrong make-up on face. When a skincare product is not suitable for a particular skin type, it tends to clog the hair follicles and cause cysts.

Treatment

If the cyst on facial skin is small in size and is not painful, then it does not require any treatment and will disappear on its own. However, when the size is large, then it becomes a cosmetic problem, and hence, it needs treatment.
Also, if the cysts get infected or ruptured, then also it has to be treated by a doctor. If the cyst swells up excessively, the doctor may administer corticosteroid injection in order to reduce the swelling.
Antibiotics are prescribed to check the infection. There are a number of methods that are being used for the purpose of removal of cysts. Doctors make a small incision on the cyst and release the fluid present in it. This is a simple technique; however, cysts may reappear after this treatment.
In another surgical technique, the entire cyst is removed so that it does not recur in future. It can also be removed with the help of laser treatment. People prefer laser removal of cysts as it gives minimum scarring.
There are some simple treatments that you can try out at home. You can relieve the pain from the cysts by applying a warm compress over the infected area. Soak a small towel in warm water, squeeze out the extra water, and gently place the towel on the face.
Application of honey and cinnamon helps fight the infection and cure the cysts. Sandalwood powder is another home remedy which is beneficial for controlling the production of sebum and soothing up the cyst.
You should not touch, rub, or prick the cysts in order to drain out the fluid present inside it since it can lead to infection and further swelling and pain. Keep the cyst and the adjoining part clean so that dirt and dust does not cause infection. Wash it regularly with soap and water, and then gently pat a clean towel to make it dry.
