There are four types of lupus:
  1. Cutaneous lupus erythematosus
  2. Drug-induced lupus erythematosus
  3. Neonatal lupus erythematosus
  4. Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE)
Discoud lupus erythematosus, a chronic dermatological disease, is one of the three forms of cutaneous lupus that occurs usually on the scalp, cheeks, nose, and ears, but can also be noticed on other parts of the body. Apart from the scarring, if a person doesn't get proper treatment on time, he/she may also have hair loss and hyperpigmentation of the skin.

Identifying the Rash

As we already discussed earlier, the rashes or legions are round in shape, red, scaly, and thick. Apart from this, the outer area of the rashes will mostly form flakes or a crust. However, over time, the rashes can be scarring (mostly in the center of the rash) and cause discoloration.
Overtime, they can increase in size and become itchy. But that is only for the rashes that appear on the face. On the scalp, however, the rashes can lead to hair fall. And once the rashes lead to scarring, the hair loss can be permanent.
Discoid lupus is a non-contagious disease that is more common in women than in men of different ethnic groups, and can occur between the ages of 20 and 45.

Preventive Measures

If the rashes exist for a long time, chances of them developing into cancer increases. Which is why, it is essential to consult with your doctor as soon as you notice the rashes.
But until then, here are some important preventive measures you need to undertake.
  • Don't go out between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. as direct or reflective sunlight is not good for the rashes.
  • Even when you're indoors, apply adequate amount of sunscreen.
  • Always have sun-protective clothes and accessories on.
  • Avoid being close to the indoor fluorescent lights.

Treatment Options

In order to understand the severity of the disease, you need a physical examination from either a dermatologist or a physician who specializes in diagnosing and treating different types of skin conditions.
Mostly, an accurate diagnosis can be made with tissue samples that require testing in a lab. But the most important thing you need to remember is that early recognition, diagnosis, and treatment can and will give you positive results. As there are several treatment options used―topical steroids, antimalarial medications, and other types of treatment methods.
Currently, there is no cure for discoid lupus, but taking necessary precautions and treatment will certainly give you relief from the symptoms.
