Mostly, the problem of dry scaly eyelids results from prolonged use of cosmetic products, shampoos, cleansers, and even from certain food products. These substances may act as allergens in some people. In some cases, the condition may be a manifestation of a medical condition called blepharitis.
This disease usually affects the edges of the eyelids causing them to become inflamed, itchy, red, flaky and scaly. People with atopic dermatitis (eczema) may also experience the same condition.

How Can You Manage the Condition?
Needless to emphasize, eyes are more sensitive than any other part of the body. Having said that, it is recommended that you should avoid self-medication to treat any problem with your eyes; in this case, the eyelids.
So before applying any products like lotions, gels, creams or moisturizers to manage the problem, it is necessary that you consult a qualified dermatologist. But there are some self-care measures that you may follow to relieve the symptoms to an extent.
☛ Soak a clean washcloth in hot water and wring it. Close your eyes, and place the washcloth on the eyelids. The warmth will help loosen the crusty deposits in the eyelids. Ensure that the cloth is not too hot.
☛ Wet a small part of the washcloth and put a few drops of baby shampoo on it. Now gently wipe away any debris or skin scales accumulated at the base of the upper and the lower eyelids. You may have to wipe the area several times in case the crusty deposits are too dry.
☛ Rinse your eyes properly with lukewarm water, and pat them dry.
☛ When you notice your eyelids becoming dry or scaly, make a note of any skin care or cosmetic products that you have been using or have used recently. Avoid using these products for sometime and see if you experience the symptoms again.
☛ Maintaining personal hygiene is also important as any infection may worsen the condition of your eyelids. Keep your hands clean all the time. Carrying a hand sanitizer with you is a good idea. Avoid touching your eyes with your hands; use a clean handkerchief if you need to.
Medical treatment of dry scaly eyelids depends on its underlying cause. For instance, if it is blepharitis, then patients may be prescribed with eyedrops which may contain antibiotics or steroids.
Artificial drops may also be recommended. And if the underlying cause is eczema, then oral or topical corticosteroids, antibiotics, antihistamines, or light therapy may be recommended to deal with the symptoms.
Dry scaly eyelids can be prevented by avoiding its underlying cause. Blepharitis may be prevented by following good personal hygiene, using clean clothes to rub eyes, and removing makeup before going to bed. If you have atopic dermatitis, then the most important step is to keep your skin moisturized.
For this you can use products prescribed to you by your doctor, and keeping yourself dry. After bathing or washing always pat your skin dry using a soft towel. Rubbing the skin makes the condition worse.
Equally important is to limit the amount of water that comes in contact with your skin including that of your eyelids. Bath no more than two times a day, and use warm water instead of hot.
