Diabetes is a condition where the blood sugar level of a person is abnormally high and needs to be controlled in order to prevent accompanying health conditions. A diet plays a significant role in controlling diabetes by maintaining proper blood sugar levels. Limiting the intake of refined carbohydrates, sugar, etc., is the preliminary step to follow.

List of High Energy Foods

Diabetic people should consume foods that do not affect the blood sugar levels and have a low glycemic index (GI) value. Carbohydrates and meat are rich sources of energy, but they can raise blood glucose levels. You can avoid them and switch to other foods for energy.

Whole Grain Products

Whole grain foods contain complex carbohydrates that are slowly absorbed in the diet and do not increase blood sugar. They do not contain fat, and hence, can be included in the diet. You can have whole grain pasta, oats, corn, wheat cereal, etc. However, it should be noted that carbohydrates should be eaten in moderation or it can affect the blood sugar level.

Pulses and Beans

Pulses, beans, and peas contain low GI index and contain nearly all other essential nutrients. You can include foods that give you energy like lentils, black beans, peas, pinto beans, red beans, etc., in your daily diet as they help in gaining energy and contain essential vitamins and minerals like magnesium, iron, etc.

Green Leafy Vegetables

Vegetables, specially the green leafy ones, are nutritious. Collard, beet and turnip greens, asparagus, spinach, kale, and broccoli contain high amounts of fiber and less amounts of fat. Green vegetables should be cooked without salt as they already contain sodium.

Seafood

As you may be aware, proteins provide energy. Fish and other sea foods (lentils and beans also) are excellent sources of protein and do not contain fat. Therefore, fish like salmon, trout, tuna, halibut, etc., can also be included in the daily diet.

Some More Energy Foods

Apart from the aforementioned ones, there are several other foods that provide energy and can be consumed by people suffering from diabetes.
