Excessive Sweating Between Legs

Ishani Chatterjee Shukla
Excessive sweating in any part of the body can be a harrowing affair. Excessive sweating between legs can make you feel uneasy and leaves you vulnerable to embarrassment especially if it takes place when you're outdoors or with company. Read all about it in the following write-up.
How does it feel when everyone in your office gives you awkward looks assuming you've pissed in your pants? Irritating? No! Embarrassing? Absolutely.
That ominous stain resulting from accumulated moisture that courses along rear of your lower garment leaves you exasperated with humiliation and distress, making it difficult to make an attempt to explain to colleagues that this is a result of excessive sweating between legs and not due to incontinence or retention issues with your bladder!
So, what causes certain parts of the body to sweat excessively? What can you do to save yourself all the physical and social discomfort arising from excessive perspiration in awkward regions of your body? Let's find out all about it.

Causes of Too Much Sweating

To put it simply, sweating way more than normal in any part of your body is caused by hyperactive sweat glands in those regions. The main question here is, what are the underlying physiological reasons or medical conditions that lead to overactivity of those sweat glands? What causes those sweat glands to produce excessive amounts of moisture?
Here is a list of some common reasons that lead to excessive sweating at various sites of the body:
  • Low blood sugar levels
  • Metabolism related issues
  • Hyperthyroidism
  • Any disorder of the nerves or injury to the spinal cord
  • Stress or paranoia
  • Panic or anxiety attacks
  • Disease or infection of the liver
  • Hot flashes (especially in post menopausal women)
  • Lymphoma
  • Parasitic infection
  • Diseases or disorders of the deeper dermal layer such as vitiligo
  • Side effects of certain medications - especially those administered for treating cancers, AIDS and also some antibiotics and paracetamols
  • Heart disease
  • Diabetes Mellitus
  • Presence of glomus tumors
However, it is not necessary that a person who sweats excessively suffers from any of the above mentioned conditions. A lot of people who sweat profusely are absolutely healthy individuals who do not have even a family history of any of the above conditions.
For such individuals, the exact reason behind their hyperactive sweat glands is still not clearly known. Among all the probable causes behind excessive perspiration listed above, menopause, cancer, medicinal side effects and neurological issues comprise the key reasons behind sweating profusely while sleeping.

Excessive Sweating Treatment

There are three ways in which you can effectively stop too much sweating between legs, on the underarms and other such nooks, corners and folds of the body, as well as open dermal areas that produce excess moisture.
The most basic way is to apply aluminum chloride based antiperspirants that block the sweat pores, making it impossible for moisture to reach the skin surface. The next best way is to go for botulinum toxin Type A shots to the specific areas so that the sweat glands that are present in that region get disabled.
The third way is to opt for anticholinergic medications that inhibit the neural impulses that trigger the moisture producing activity of the sweat glands.
The best and most effective way of permanently curing excessive sweatiness is to address the underlying biological and physiological issues that trigger hyperactivity of the sweat glands.
However, if an individual, otherwise absolutely healthy, suffers from excessive sweating at odd areas of the body that may leave him vulnerable to embarrassment and bacterial infection, he/she should always maintain high standards of personal hygiene such as bathing regularly with medicated products that arrest body odor as well as kill microbes.
Also, topical application of absorbent products such as medicated talcum powders is an effective way to prevent staining of garments and keeping the body dry.
Although most people opt for it, I, personally, do not recommend using antiperspirants as they block the sweat pores which can lead to a lot of infections and skin related complications in the long term. Stay clean, maintain hygiene and use the right products to avoid discomfort as well as embarrassment.
