Dizziness is the feeling of lightheadedness. There is an illusion of motion when a person feels dizzy. The person feels as though all his surroundings are spinning fast. When the aforementioned feelings of dizziness are very strong, the person is said to be feeling extremely dizzy.
There are several causes for this reeling sensation. Some of the most common causes are
  • Dehydration
  • Pregnancy
  • Extreme fatigue
  • Extreme hunger
  • Weakness after flu and cold
  • Sinus pressure
Following are the three major causes of dizziness:

Vertigo

A person suffering from vertigo feels that his/her surroundings are moving very fast when actually, he and the surroundings are very still. It is caused due to a number of reasons which lead to extreme dizziness. These causes are as follows:
Inflammation in the Inner Ear
Inflammation in the inner ear sets off vertigo. The person experiences extreme lightheadedness and vomiting. These feelings can persist for a few hours or for a few days. The person is unable to balance himself and there is also a temporary loss of hearing during this condition. Fortunately, this is a condition that clears itself in a few days.
Migraine
Some people who suffer from migraine may experience extreme lightheadedness along with severe headaches and vision problem. For some of these people, vertigo becomes the only symptom of migraine. Bed rest is recommended in such cases.
Meniere's Disease
This disease is related to the dysfunction of the canals in the inner ear of a person. Vomiting and nausea are also experienced by the person. There is a certain loss in hearing, which tends to become worse and eventually becomes permanent.
Others
After a head injury, there are chances that the person might suffer from vertigo. If he experiences severe dizziness and nausea which is accompanied by vomiting, then the case is serious, and the person should be immediately taken to the doctor. Recurrent ear infections can also lead to extreme lightheadedness and vertigo in a person.

Feeling of Faintness

A person might feel faint and lightheaded without losing consciousness. This causes a reeling sensation accompanied by a feeling of nausea. There are several causes for this faint feeling. They are as follows:
Blood Pressure
When a person sits too quickly or gets up too quickly, he may suddenly feel extremely dizzy. This happens because of drop in the blood pressure due to the sudden body movement.
Less Blood Output
There are many medical conditions which result in decreasing the amount of blood flow from the heart to the other parts of the body. This low output of the blood results in a feeling of faintness and extreme lightheadedness.

Disequilibrium

In simple words, disequilibrium is loss of balance. This loss of balance gives a feeling of unsteadiness. This unsteadiness could be due to a number of reasons that are mentioned below:
Sensory Disorders
Problems in the nerves of the legs and nerve damage can cause a feeling of unsteadiness. This is followed by a dizzy feeling.
Joint Problems
Weak joints and weak muscles do not allow the person to balance himself properly. This loss of balance makes the person feel as though everything around him is spinning. This is the feeling of dizziness.
Others
Several diseases like the Parkinson's disease, inner ear problems, and spinal cord disorders can also make a person lose his balance. These are the causes of lightheadedness in the elderly.

Others

Apart from the aforementioned causes, medications, generalized anxiety disorders, and ear disorders are also responsible for causing a dizzy sensation. This feeling should not be ignored, and the person needs to be treated in time in order to avoid any complications later.
It is prudent to consult a doctor in time for the simple reason that a person may suffer from a sudden spell of extreme dizziness at any given point of time. He may be walking on the road, may be on the way to the office, or may be alone at home. The person may need help at these times, and hence, it is necessary that he consults a doctor in time without ignoring these symptoms.
