You might experience various eyestrain symptoms and think that they are just normal. But, remember that if not treated on time, these symptoms might keep recurring and affect your routine, causing a lot of discomfort to your eyes.
If you spend long hours working on a computer, eyestrain might be a regular problem for you. This has become a common problem for people whose routine involves long working hours on the computer. Also, those who might be watching television or reading in dim light can develop this problem.
Many times it happens that you do not realize you are suffering from this problem. The discomfort experienced when you focus your eyes somewhere for a long duration is known as strain. This happens because your eye muscles get tired due to prolonged use.

Symptoms

  • One of the most common eyestrain symptoms is headache. You might experience headaches frequently due to strain in your eyes. After a few minutes of concentrating on the computer screen or reading something, you might start having a headache. Similarly, migraine is also a symptom.
  • You might experience pain especially above your eyebrows due to the strain. Mild to severe eye pain is also usually caused.
  • Watery eyes and burning or itching in eyes might be caused due to overuse.
  • Redness of eyes and constant irritation.
  • Sometimes, you might also suffer from sore and scratchy eyes as a result of strain.
  • Severe symptoms include blurry or double vision. This is a common problem with people working on computers for long hours. This can also be followed by changes in color perception.
  • You might start figuring some after-images when you move your focus away from the monitor, which is one of the most common symptom.
  • You might also experience droopy eyelids and your eyelids may also hurt or itch while blinking.
  • If your eyesight is also getting affected, like objects that are a little far away appear unclear or blurry, or you have trouble while moving your eyesight from computer screen to other objects, then you must get your eyes checked.
  • Most of the time it happens that while you concentrate on something, the normal eye blinking rate reduces. This further leads to dry eyes.
  • Muscle spasm around your eyes or twitching of eyelids.
  • You might also have increased sensitivity to light due to this problem.

Treatment

If you are suffering from any of the above symptoms, then you must take proper eye care to get rid of them. Remember that low light is one of the primary causes of this problem. Make it a point that you read, watch television, and work on computer in a well-lighted room.
Remember not to sit very near to the screens or hold the book very close while reading. Taking regular breaks and shifting your eye away for a few minutes is also very essential. You can also move your focus to a green object to relax your eyes. You can also opt for some eye exercises.
Blinking your eyes constantly is very essential. You can try some home remedies too, like keeping a cotton pad soaked in rose water over your eye lids at night to help them relax. Keeping your computer slightly below the eye level will also help reduce the problem.
You must always follow the above mentioned things to keep eyestrain at bay. Remember that if the symptoms are recurring, you must soon visit a specialist to get your eyes checked. He/she will give you some prescription drops for treatment.
