Eye stye is caused due to the infection of glands lining the margin of the eyelid. It could be an external stye when either the sebaceous gland of zeis or the sweat glands of Moll are infected.
Internal stye is the result of the infection of the meibomian sebaceous glands lying along the inner side of the eyelid. External eye stye results in the formation of small red bumps anywhere along the edge of the outer surface of the eyelid, where the gland has been infected.
On the other hand, an internal eye stye manifests just as redness and swelling on the outer side of the eyelid.
An eye stye is caused by the Staphylococcus bacteria. This infection is common in infants. However, it may occur in adults as well. Although it last only for a couple of days, they are painful and hence, it is important to know about some effective cures for this condition.

Symptoms

Eye styes are like small pimples or red bumps that are formed on the eyelid. The eyelid swells and becomes sore. Some of the symptoms of this eye problem are:
  • Redness and swelling of the eyelid in the area where the stye is caused
  • Pain and tenderness of the affected area
  • Watering of the eye
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Discomfort when blinking
  • In case of too much swelling of the eyelid, normal vision may be obstructed
  • In some cases, the condition develops over 5 to 7 days, gets filled with pus that is discharged once the stye bursts.

Cure

Most of the time, this condition gets cured on its own specially if no pus has formed inside it. Even if there is pus, the stye develops in 5 to 7 days and then bursts releasing the pus inside it. In certain serious cases, surgical drainage of pus may be required.
Other options for treatment are:
  • Warm Compress: Apply warm compress to the infected eyelid for 10 minutes. This should be done 3 to 4 times daily till the condition is cured. The warm compress helps to drain the pus and relieve pain.
  • Antibiotics: An antibiotic eye drop or ointment can also help heal the staph infection in the eye. In case the skin around the bump has also got infected, antibiotic pills may be required as prescribed by a physician.

Home Remedies

Here are some effective home remedies that can ensure relief from this staph infection in the eye:
  • Using grated potato as a poultice to the affected area reduces swelling in the eyelid.
  • Cut an aloe vera leaf along its length and put its fleshy side on the stye.
  • Boil a handful of acacia leaves in a cup of water. Use this decoction as a compress on the eye to cure the infection.
  • An effective home remedy can be made using coriander seeds. Boil a teaspoon of coriander seeds in a cupful of water. Use this as an eyewash 3 to 4 times daily.
  • Alum solution is one of the many useful home remedies for this staph infection. Just add 2 to 3 granules of alum in a cup of water. Using this solution as an eye wash, works as an effective treatment.
  • Wet a tea bag and place it over the eye for 8 to 10 minutes everyday. This provides quick relief from the infection.
  • Add one teaspoon of turmeric in 2 cups of water and boil it till the amount reduces to half. Filter this solution so that even the finest of the turmeric granules are removed. This solution then should be used as an eye drop 3 to 4 times daily as a cure.

Some Tips

For faster relief, adhere to the following tips:
  • Avoid rubbing the eyes.
  • Refrain from using eye make-up or wearing contact lenses as this may just aggravate the infection.
  • Is eye stye contagious? Yes it is, through direct contact. Hence, do not try to squeeze the pus out of the stye as it may spread the infection to the other parts of the eye.
The aforementioned cures are simple measures that might provide relief from the infection in a couple of days. However, one should remember that hygiene is the best measure to keep this infection away.
