Eyebrow Twitching

Sometimes, the muscular structure above the eyebrows may experience sudden spasms, some mild and some, too evident. The action may be involuntary, and all of a sudden. This phenomenon is referred to as eyebrow twitching.

This is not a rare problem and almost all of us may experience sudden spasms in the eyebrows or upper eyelids at some point of time.

You may experience twitching in the eyebrow for days together, without actually knowing the real reason for what may be causing it. A sensation of the skin throbbing or jumping can be felt at the site of twitching.

A weak nerve may be the triggering the muscle spasm on the eyebrows. At times, upper eyelid twitching may radiate towards the eyebrows and give rise to muscle spasms. This spasmodic reaction is due to the signal sent by the brain to the nerves, which controls every muscular movement.

There can be many reasons for why the eyebrows may twitch, or experience sudden muscle contractions. Some of the causative factors may not be of grave concern and may resolve themselves without treatment. However, if you experience twitching for a week, or even more than that, then there may be other reasons.

Here are some of the causes of twitching upper eyelid which in turn may trigger a twitching or spasmodic sensation in the eyebrows.

• Getting overtly tired can trigger muscle spasms, not only in the eyebrows but the entire body as well. Fatigue is one of the main causative factors for weakening the muscles. When the body is drained off energy, the muscles send signals in the form of spasms or cramps.

• Loss of fluid from the body, or suffering from dehydration, is also one of the triggers for noticing twitching in the muscular structure of the eyebrows. The muscles need ample amounts of water and fluids to function properly without any hindrance. Ignoring this fact can lead to this problem.

• Infections like flu or sinusitis can also be responsible for the occurrence of muscle twitches. Food poisoning, as a result of eating contaminated food, may lead to the weakening of muscles, a failure to treat, which can result in twitching.

• People suffering from anemia, a condition where the red blood cell count is way below normal, may also experience uncontrollable and sudden muscle spasms, not only in the eyebrows and eyelids, but also of the hands and feet. Diabetic patients may also undergo the same sensation.

• Muscular dystrophy nerve problems and autoimmune disorders like lupus also exhibit muscle cramps as one of the symptoms. These contractions may also cause a degree of pain in the body. A lapse in treating muscular dystrophy can end up in the person becoming paralyzed, temporarily or permanently.

• Other conditions which can result in spasms around the eyes are brain tumor, alcoholism, Cushing's syndrome, side effects of certain medications or nutritional deficiency. Kidney failure and hypothyroidism, where the thyroid hormones are inadequate, may also be causes of twitching sensation in the eyebrows, as well as the entire body.

Though not always a matter of grave concern, twitching in the eyebrows or upper eyelids can also be a sign of some underlying serious health disorder.

There is no actual treatment for twitching eyebrows, however, a remedies can be helpful in controlling the spasms. You can massage the area with your fingertips, applying equal pressure to bring down the spasms.

Applying cold or warm compresses to the eyebrow can also be a solution to control non stop muscle cramps and spasms. Taking a hot shower can also help relieve this muscular problem.
