Facial Swelling Causes

Fluid build-up results in behind facial swelling. It is a very common disorder. It can happen suddenly or overnight. Read this post to get information on its causes and associated symptoms.

Facial swelling is the enlargement of any part of the face like eyes, nose, lips, forehead, chin, cheeks and mouth. Fluid build-up in the face results in swelling. The swelling can spread and affect neck and upper arms.
Usually the swelling is mild and can even be cured at home. But in some cases it may be a sign of some medical emergency. But if you know about its causes and its symptoms you can manage to control it in its initial stage.

Symptoms of Facial Swelling

Following are some of the symptoms of facial swelling which are considered mild and not too dangerous:
  • Redness at the affected area
  • Tenderness
  • Mild pain
  • Rash
  • Fever
Some symptoms which are associated with serious and severe swelling are given below. One should immediately contact the doctor in case of these symptoms:
  • Mouth and tongue swelling
  • Swallowing difficulties
  • Breathing problems
  • Neck swelling
  • Lip swelling

Facial Swelling Causes

It has been reported that there are more than 250 causes of facial swelling. If the swelling is mild, it's very difficult to detect, and when it's in excess it is very difficult to hide. It's better to be aware about its causes and try to avoid as much as possible. Here are some of the common causes.
  • Allergies or Allergic reactions: For example hay fever, bee sting, allergic rhinitis, etc.
  • Conjunctivitis or Pink eye: It is a contagious infection associated with the eye.
  • Angioedema: Swelling is seen around the eyes and mouth.
  • Injury: Any type of injury, or trauma to the face like burns.
  • Surgery: It can be nose, head or jaw surgery.
  • Blood transfusion reaction: Swelling may occur if the blood is not compatible with the donor.
  • Cellulitis: It is one of the common bacterial infection.
  • Drug Reaction: This may vary from person to person. It may be caused by aspirin, sulfa, penicillin and others.
  • Sinusitis: It can be caused by the inflammation of sinuses that occur by the fungal, viral or bacterial infection.
  • Malnutrition: Swelling may be caused in severe cases.
  • Eye Stye: It is an inflamed oil glad that is found on the edge of the eyelid.
  • Tooth Abscess: They are small pus pockets found in the tooth. They can cause severe pain and can affect the tooth.
  • Thyroid Imbalance: Swollen face may be observed due to the under active or inefficient thyroid gland.
  • Obesity: Obese people usually observe swelling on the face.
  • Tonsils: This is one of the examples of unilateral facial swelling. Its complications can result in sever throat pain, difficulty in swallowing, etc.
  • Skin Conditions: Swelling is observed in some skin conditions such as acne, sebaceous cysts, boils, etc.
Swelling is not symmetrical. So, if you found one side of your cheek swelled or any other facial swelling, don't panic and just take advice from your doctor. With some home remedies or medical treatments, you can easily reduce swelling on face in a short period of time.
