Amruta Deshpande
It is very common for individuals to put on weight after the gastric bypass surgery. Tap ahead for tips on preventing weight gain post the surgery.
Gastric bypass is a surgical procedure to reduce the size of the stomach, and create a way for food to pass through a part of the small intestine. When the size decreases, the amount of food that the stomach can hold, also reduces. It is a great option for those who are unable to lose weight, and have carried extra weight for a long period of time. It is one of the most popular weight loss surgeries, and ensures lesser absorption of calories, resulting in massive and immediate weight loss.
This surgery has helped a number of patients to overcome the problem of obesity. However, in the years that follow, some individuals start gaining weight. To avoid this, one has to follow a suitable diet plan, and make some major changes in lifestyle. Therefore, it becomes very important to understand how to eat, and what to eat after the surgery.

Post Surgery Weight Gain

The main cause of gaining weight after surgery is intake of high calorie foods. Overeating puts one back on the track of gaining more weight, despite the bypassed stomach. This causes the stomach lining to stretch and extend, thus reversing the effect of the surgery and creating more space to occupy food.
It is likely that one loses considerable weight within one to three years after the procedure, only to regain it in the following years. This is usually experienced by those who fail to follow the recommended post surgery diet, and to make the necessary lifestyle changes. There are several ways in which to avoid gaining weight after the surgery.

Tips for Preventing Weight Gain

» One must consume foods such as protein shakes, fruit smoothies, sugar-free snacks, soups, stews, and pureed vegetables to prevent weight gain. Consumption of solid foods may not be allowed immediately after the surgery. Eating pureed, soft, or liquid foods is the typical diet plan to be followed for about eight to ten weeks after the surgery.
» The reduced capacity of stomach allows it to hold lesser amount of food than it normally did. Therefore, one must stop eating before feeling full, as eating too much will not only result in weight gain, but will also cause stomach pain, nausea, and vomiting.
» It is best to consult a dietitian or nutritionist to design a suitable diet plan. The diet plan generally includes foods that are low in sugar and fat.
» Stress management is another important factor to be considered. One must find ways to deal with any stress or anxiety, since it may lead to binge eating. Psychotherapy is a good way to tackle various emotional issues.
» One must make sure that they exercise regularly. Simple activities like walking, jogging, cycling, aerobics, and yoga can help in maintaining a healthy weight.
