Heartburn is a medical condition associated with the digestive system. It is also known by some other names like Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) and acid reflux disease. The symptoms can be instigated by different causes in different people, However, some symptoms are common in most people.
One of the most common signs is the rise of stomach acid back into the esophagus. It is a consequence of the relaxation of the muscles in the proximity of the entryway of the stomach, which results into a reverse flow of whatever has been eaten, along with the stomach acid and digestive enzymes up into the esophagus. This is also known as acid reflux.

Causes

Diet is the most common reason of heartburn. Intake of substances with too much caffeine such as coffee and chocolate raises its risk. Fried and fatty foods can also aggravate the symptoms, along with acidic foods like tomatoes. There are some other causes in men.
  • Consuming too many chocolates.
  • Eating a lot of citrus fruits (they have a high content of acid like substances in them).
  • Drinking any beverage or drink that consists of high amount of caffeine.
  • Carbonated drinks.
  • Excessive consumption of alcohol.
  • Sleeping or lying down immediately after a meal.
  • Eating tomatoes and onions.
  • Excessive smoking.
  • Excess weight or obesity.
  • Eating oily, spicy, and fatty food.
  • Certain medicines that are prescribed for high blood pressure.
Symptoms
There are various signs of acid reflux, but most people have similar symptoms.
  • Pain in the chest, particularly while bending, lying down, or eating.
  • Flaring sensation in the throat or sour, warm, acidic or salty-tasting liquid rising in the throat.
  • Problems in swallowing anything.
  • Irritating feeling in the chest at the back of the breastbone that arises after eating and lasts for quite some time.
  • Feeling of food getting stuck while going down the chest or throat.
  • Heartburn might give rise to chronic cough, soreness in the throat, or chronic hoarseness.
Heartburn is relatively easy to diagnose. Although, your doctor might also make you take special tests to find the severity of the problem or to monitor your treatment. Special tests may also be needed if you have some different symptoms, such as rapid loss of weight, or if you are suffering from the complexities of GERD.
