How Do You Know if You Have a Yeast Infection

Madhura Pandit
As there are numerous signs and symptoms observed, identifying yeast infection is not difficult. This story provides a list of symptoms of yeast infection.
Yeast infection is caused by the fungus known as Candida albicans. It is also known as thrush, candidiasis or fungal infection. Candida albicans fungus is naturally found in the body, especially in the mouth and genital regions.
It is harmless as long as its growth is kept under control. However, certain factors trigger the growth of candida, resulting in infection, known as yeast or fungal infection.
Among these factors, excess use of antibiotics is one of the most significant causes of yeast infection. Antibiotics meant to treat urinary tract or other vaginal infections can lead to uncontrolled multiplication of the fungus.
Also, chemotherapy, consumption of excess amounts of sugar, taking birth control pills can also increase the risk of yeast infections. Candidiasis or fungal infection is one of the most common conditions experienced by women.

What are the Signs of a Yeast Infection

Yeast infection can be divided into two types: oral infection (oral thrush) and genital infection (vaginal infection (in females) and penile infection (in males)). The following are the symptoms of oral and genital yeast infection that will help you in identifying this condition.

Oral Yeast Infection Symptoms

Oral fungal infection can be experienced by both, men and women. The infection inside the mouth is easier to recognize due to the obvious symptoms:
  • Creamy white lesions in the inside of the mouth, on tongue and gums
  • Sometimes slight bleeding from these lesions
  • Difficulty in swallowing
  • Loss of taste
  • Cracking in corners of mouth
  • Constant feeling as if something is stuck in the mouth

Vaginal Yeast infection Symptoms

Vaginal infection in women, also known as vulvovaginal candidiasis, is often ignored by women, and hence, not easily diagnosed. The symptoms appear a few days prior to the menstrual period. Following are vaginal yeast infection symptoms in women.
  • Vaginal discharge having a cottage cheese like appearance
  • Itching, burning, and irritation in vagina
  • Pain during intercourse

Penile Yeast infection Symptoms

The symptoms of penile yeast infection appear within a couple of days of getting infected and are nearly similar to those of vaginal infection. Following are the symptoms of yeast infection in men.
  • Itching and pain around penis
  • White discharge
  • Cracked skin
Both, men and women experience pain during intercourse when suffering from genital yeast infection. It should also be noted that the infection can be transmitted from one person to the other during a sexual intercourse, and hence, it is essential to identify and treat it as soon as possible.
Yeast infection treatment includes use of antifungal medications and ointments or use of home remedies like tea tree oil and garlic. On the other hand, it is essential to follow the candida cleanse diet for the treatment and prevention of this disease.
As there are chances of yeast infection to occur more than once, it is recommended to consult a doctor and get the condition treated properly when you observe the symptoms.
As a concluding note, it can be said that yeast infection can be treated effectively if the symptoms are identified quickly, and timely treatment is undertaken. Take care!
