We all have experienced spells of dizziness at one point of time or the other. People describe it in many different ways. Some describe it as lightheadedness and others may call it a sense of giddiness, faintness, or whirling. Sometimes, it is attributed to vertigo.
It is difficult to explain how it feels like, but it causes a lot of discomfort, and feels like the world around you is spinning. What makes it worse is the occurrence of other accompanying symptoms such as weakness, changes in vision, nausea, tingling in hands and legs, confusion, etc.

Causes

There are several factors that can be held responsible for causing dizziness. Some of them are listed below:
  • Problems in the inner ear
  • Injury to the head
  • Nerve damage
  • Stress and anxiety
  • Migraine
  • Vision disorder
  • Dehydration
  • Side effects of medicines
  • Sudden drop in blood pressure
  • A heart disease that affects the blood flow to the brain.

Preventing Dizziness

When you start feeling dizzy, it makes you very uncomfortable. Read on for a few simple tips on how to get rid of dizziness instantly:
Tip #1: If you are standing when you experience dizziness, then you must sit down or lie down to prevent yourself from falling down. This will also help your body to relax and regain its balance.
Tip #2: There is no doubt that dizziness gives such a strange feeling that it makes you feel that something is seriously wrong and you panic. However, you should calm yourself by taking slow deep breaths. This will improve the supply of oxygen to various parts of the body and you will feel better.
Tip #3: While you rest your body, focus on any immobile object around you. This will help you to restore the equilibrium of the body. If you watch it very carefully, your mind will get diverted from the other distractions like weakness, nausea, etc., that come along with the dizzy feeling.
Tip #4: Once the dizziness stops, do not make any rapid movements like standing up or turning your head suddenly. This is because fast movements can cause a drop in blood pressure and you may feel dizzy all over again. Therefore, make sure you move slowly.
Tip #5: As the dizzy feelings subside, drink a glass of ice-cold water. It will not only hydrate the body, but also control further aggravation of the dizzy feeling.

Home Remedies

When you are bothered by frequent spells of dizziness, you can try going for one or more of the following home remedies:
Remedy #1: Eat fresh fruits or have fruit juice rich in vitamin C like Indian gooseberry, orange, or strawberry. Have these fruits with a pinch of salt or sugar. This will control the whirling sensation as well as nausea which is commonly associated with dizziness.
Remedy #2: Squeeze out the juice of one fresh lemon in a glass of water. Then add a pinch of pinch of salt and black pepper powder to it. Stir the mixture well and drink it.
Remedy #3: Chop a few cloves of garlic and boil them with a cup of water for few minutes. Strain out the garlic pieces and drink the solution. Garlic can reduce dizziness really well. For this reason, you should include more garlic in your daily diet.
Remedy #4: When you experience dizziness, eating yogurt can make you feel better. For better results, you can even add a few slices of fresh fruits to it.
Remedy #5: Put 2-3 basil leaves in a cup of milk and boil it. Remove the leaves and drink the milk before going to bed. If you follow this every night, it would help you to cure the problem permanently.

Treating Dizziness

When you are experiencing constant dizziness that refuses to go with home treatments, you must visit a doctor for a checkup. He will study your symptoms, medical history, and lifestyle to diagnose the problem. Vestibular rehabilitation therapy (or VRT) is recommended for some people.
It is conducted by a physical therapist who suggests some specific exercises which enable the patient to maintain proper body balance during head and eye movements. They also use another technique known as canalith repositioning where they manipulate the positioning of the patient's head to cure dizziness permanently.
They also prescribe oral medicines for treating vertigo. If there is any underlying cause for this condition then carry out the treatment to cure the cause. An inner ear infection is treated with the help of antibiotics. For migraine and anxiety disorders, doctors often suggest a change in diet and lifestyle and advise the patient to manage stress.
If the dizziness is caused due to side effects of certain medicines, your doctor would advise a change in the same.
Dizziness may not be a serious issue, but as it may lead to loss of balance, there is a chance of a bad fall and the resultant injury is often a cause of concern. So, make your home fall-proof. Remove all materials like area rugs, exposed electrical cords, etc. to avoid tripping.
Place nonslip mats on wet floor areas of the bathroom and kitchens. In case you experience constant dizziness or frequent spells of it, you can use a cane while moving around. Take care.
