Ingrown Fingernail

Nicks J
Ingrown fingernail occurs when the nail grows in such a way that it edges cut into the surrounding skin. This can become a serious issue, especially when it is accompanied by a fungal infection.
Normal nail growth is such that the edges of the nails protrude outwards and generally do not touch the skin around it. However, in case of ingrown fingernails, the edges seem to grow in the direction of the skin. As the nails grow, the sharp edges try to penetrate the skin, which can be quite hurting and may trigger a fungal infection around the site of discomfort.

Symptoms

An ingrown fingernail is generally red and its edges appear blunt. As the edges grow inwards, the skin around it may appear swollen. This unusual fingernail growth, can cause pain, especially while touching or moving the finger. Formation of pus near the nail is an indication of nail fungus that may cause severe pain.

Causes

Cutting the nail in an improper manner is the most common cause. Not clipping it properly allows it to grow into the soft tissues of the skin. No doubt, cutting the nails from time to time is a good habit, but trimming it very short can eventually cause the nail to dig into the surrounding skin.
Some women, in order to make the nails more attractive, cut the nails in a curved manner. This is a wrong way of cutting the nail and can certainly predispose a person to these fingernail problems. A trauma such as an injury or an accident can also interfere with the normal development of the fingernails.

Treatment

Soften the Nails

Trimming the ingrown nail is the only solution to get rid of this problem. However, before actually using a nail clipper to cut its corners, it is necessary to soften the nail, so that one does not find it difficult or experience pain while cutting the ingrown portion of the nail.
An easy way to reduce its hardness is to dip the affected finger into a solution of warm salt water and baking soda for around 10-15 minutes.
The excessive growth around the skin, is generally very hard and stubborn, so soaking it just once may not be enough to achieve the desired degree of softness. In most cases, 4-5 sessions of salt water therapy, each lasting for half an hour is essential to make the nails considerably soft. This will ensure that trimming the ingrown part of the nail becomes an easy and painless procedure.

Apply Olive Oil

Massaging the affected nail with warm olive oil can definitely help to bring down the pain considerably. Besides strengthening brittle fingernails, olive oil also promotes proper nail growth.

Use Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is known for its antifungal and antibacterial activity, hence applying it on the affected nail can help to combat and prevent infections. Diluted tea tree oil is also useful for the same purpose.
Also, washing hands with soaps containing harsh chemicals, can worsen pain of the affected nail. Instead, go for mild soaps to protect the tender skin near the ingrown fingernail from harmful damage.
