Is Liposuction a Good Way to Lose Weight?

Richard Clayton
One of the most common cosmetic procedures for your body is liposuction. People have been opting for liposuction to reduce the body fat for many years now, and it has proved beneficial, too.
For many, liposuction is a great way of getting the ideal body type of their choice. Despite its popularity, many people still don’t have a good understanding of what the procedure entails.
A common misconception about liposuction is that it’s an easy way of losing weight. While liposuction can change the appearance of your body, it isn’t a weight-loss method. Liposuction is only intended to remove fat from targeted areas as a way to contour the body.
This can help with stubborn fat that won’t go away easily. You can get noticeable results from liposuction, but it’s in no way intended to be used to lose weight.

How Does Liposuction Work?

To understand the effects you can get from liposuction, you need to understand how it works. During all liposuction procedures, a thin tube will be inserted into the body to remove unwanted fat.
The tube is connected to a vacuum that allows removal of fat from the particular area. While this is done in all liposuction procedures, there are a few different types of liposuction processes also. Each procedure is similar, the main difference being in how the fat is broken down.

Tumescent Liposuction

Tumescent liposuction is usually the most common way. Before the tube is inserted, a saline solution will be injected into the fat. The solution is used to break down the fat. After the solution is injected, it gets easier for the fat to be removed from the body.

Ultrasound-Assisted Liposuction

In ultrasound-assisted liposuction, sound waves are used instead of saline solution. These soundwaves rupture the cell walls of the fat to break them and turn them into a liquid to be removed from the body.

Laser Liposuction

Fat is broken down during laser liposuction with the use of lasers. These lasers use a burst of energy to turn the fat into a liquid.

Who Should Opt for Liposuction

Since liposuction won’t help with weight loss, you should already be close to your ideal weight before the procedure. Liposuction is best for people who are comfortable with their weight but have some trouble areas.
This can include excess fat on areas like stomach and arms that can’t be fixed with diet and exercises. If you’ve struggled with weight in a certain area, consider getting liposuction as it will help you contour and reshape the area as you like.
Additionally, a person getting liposuction should have a good amount of elasticity in the skin. After the fat is removed, you’ll experience some sagging skin because of the missing fat.
Those with elasticity in their skin will be able to recover from this quickly. Anyone looking to have liposuction done should also already be in good overall health to avoid complications.

How Much Weight Can One Lose

You may be surprised by the weight liposuction removes. After liposuction, you can clearly see the results, however it doesn’t remove a significant amount of weight. The average process removes one to eleven pounds fat.
The total skin you take off also depends on your weight prior to the procedure. It is suggested not to have more than eleven pounds removed. Once fat cells of an area are removed, they cannot grow back, although you could still gain weight around the area.

Other Procedures to Be Done

To enhance the effects of liposuction, many people decide to have procedures that will balance out results. One of them is to get tummy tuck. After fat is removed from the stomach, there may be skin that doesn’t adjust to the new size.
This causes excess sagging skin that could add more bulk than you’d like after liposuction. A tummy tuck will remove this skin so that the stomach is flat. It’s also common to have a breast augmentation to complement liposuction.
