Having itchy, watery red eyes can be a symptom of an eye problem or allergy. Along with red eyes, if you experience other symptoms like swelling, burning sensation, dryness, and blurred vision, etc., then it is definitely a cause of concern. If you have recently developed this problem and experience it frequently, it is wise to have the condition diagnosed immediately before it worsens.

Causes

Exposure to bright sun, dust, etc., are the common and minor causes of itchiness and redness in the eyes. On the other hand, a person suffering from common cold and flu may also experience itching and watering of the eyes.

Allergies

Allergy, caused due to airborne allergens, is one of the most common causes of burning sensation and itchiness in eyes. Eye allergies can be caused due to various reasons like exposure to dust, mold, dry air, harmful gases, substances, pollutants, etc. On the other hand, some people are even found to be allergic to eye drops used to treat dry eyes.

Conjunctivitis

Inflammation of the conjunctiva or the outer membrane of the eye is known as conjunctivitis or pink eye. Conjunctivitis is caused due to viral or bacterial infections and is extremely contagious, i.e., it can be easily transmitted from one person to the other. Reddening, itching, watering of eyes, etc., are the common symptoms of conjunctivitis.

Strain

Constant straining of the eye is also one of common conditions that cause dry, itchy, red eyes. Reading for hours together, working on the computer for a long time, etc., are the significant causes of strain. On the other hand, not getting enough sleep or insomnia can also lead to excess strain on the eyes.

Glaucoma

Glaucoma is one of the most severe causes of dry, itchy, red eyes and also one of the leading causes of blindness in people. It is caused due to increased pressure within the eyeball, which leads to damage to the optic nerve.
Blurred vision, tunnel vision, reddening of the eye, etc., are the symptoms of glaucoma. If this condition remains untreated for a long time, it can result in permanent blindness.

Treatment

It is essential to identify the exact cause of allergic reaction and avoid being exposed to it. However, if you suffer from an allergic reaction, there are medications that can help in allergy relief.
Conjunctivitis can be treated with the help of medications and eye drops. However, people suffering from conjunctivitis should be isolated to prevent the spread of the infection.
Treatment of glaucoma depends on the extent to which the disease has spread. For e.g., in the initial stages, eye drops and other oral medications may be helpful, whereas, in severe cases, a surgery may be required.
It is essential to follow certain self-help methods to ease the discomfort caused due to strain. You should take a short break after every hour while working on the computer or reading and close the eyes for a minute or two to reduce strain. Splashing water on the face or gently massaging around the eyes with fingers also helps in eye care.
As a concluding note, you should remember to have a regular eye checkup and not ignore symptoms of eye problems. Take care!
