Lower abdominal pain can be triggered by a host of factors, which can be routine or serious. Nevertheless, if this pain is recurring and persistent, it is prudent to visit the doctor to rule out any serious underlying condition. Here are a few possible causes that lead to abdominal pain in women.

Pain on the Right Side

  • Appendicitis: Appendicitis is often characterized by pain in the lower abdomen on the right side. Nausea and loss of appetite also accompany the pain.
  • Ectopic Pregnancy: Ectopic pregnancy is a conception that occurs in the Fallopian tube. An early sign of this type of a pregnancy is lower stomach pain.
  • Ovarian Cyst: An ovarian cyst is a fluid-filled sack arising from the ovary. It can be treated with medication and surgery.
  • Mid-cycle Pain: Somewhere midway in your menstrual cycle, there is a possibility of feeling of pain in the lower abdomen. This sensation is temporary, and fades out with the culmination of your period.
  • Kidney Infection: Pain in lower region of the stomach occurs on the right side in case of kidney stone or kidney infection. This pain can at times travel to the lower back as well.

Pain on the Left Side

The presence of ovarian cysts may lead to pain on the left side of the lower abdomen, and so does an ectopic pregnancy and kidney stones. Other than these, diverticulitis―the formation of tiny pockets on the lining of the bowel, can also cause this symptom to occur. It can also cause diarrhea or constipation.

Gradual Pain

Mid-cycle pain begins steadily, peaks, and then reduces gradually. Other abdominal pains that are gradual in nature could be caused by renal colic, gastroenteritis, or functional bowel syndrome.

Sudden Pain

Sudden pain in the lower abdomen can hit like a brick, out of the blue, and the reasons can be many. Ectopic pregnancy is normally characterized by a sudden abdominal pain. It is like a shooting pain that occurs out of the blue. Ovarian cysts also be suddenly painful.
