Microcurrent Therapy for Face

Chandramita Bora
Microcurrent therapy is a cosmetic procedure that relies on low-voltage currents to improve muscle tone, and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Find out more about this therapy, and its benefits, through this post.
Microcurrent therapy, also known as 'microcurrent electrical neuromuscular stimulation' (MENS), is a physical therapy that was developed for the treatment of facial weakness caused by strokes and Bell's Palsy.
Today, this therapy is used for treating muscular injuries, spasms, swelling, and inflammation and pain. In this treatment, low-voltage electric currents are passed through the affected tissues and muscles, in order to relieve the pain and speed up the healing process.

What is Microcurrent Therapy?

This technique is based on the principle that every cell of our body has electrical impulses. But an injury or trauma can disrupt the normal electrical activities of the cells. In this therapy, an electric current that is similar to the body's natural electrical signal is applied on the affected cells.
Such small electric currents can penetrate a cell, and restore balance in its electrical activity. This therapy is no longer restricted to the clinical field. In fact, it has gained wide scale popularity in the cosmetic industry as well.
Microcurrent therapy, also known as microcurrent facelift, or non-surgical facelift, uses a very low-voltage current for toning the facial muscles. It is a non-invasive cosmetic technique that aims at improving the muscle tone of the face and the neck, and thus diminish or prevent the signs of skin aging.
Basically, weak electrical stimuli are sent to the facial muscles in order to relax them, and increase blood circulation.
This procedure is not only painless, but immensely effective in strengthening the facial muscles. In this procedure, muscles and tissues of the face and the neck are electrically stimulated with the help of a device. This therapy helps tighten the facial muscles over a period of time.
It is less time-consuming than many other cosmetic procedures, and does not require a long healing or recovery time. Moreover, it does not cause any significant side effects, as compared to other procedures and cosmetic surgery.

Benefits of Facial Microcurrent Therapy

This therapy has many benefits. It can improve muscle tone, and reduce or eliminate fine lines and wrinkles. It also helps tighten sagging skin and improve blood circulation, which can stimulate the production of collagen. Collagen is the fibrous scleroprotein responsible for maintaining skin elasticity.
In other words, microcurrent facial treatment can help make the skin more radiant and younger looking. Apart from these, microcurrent treatment for face can increase lymphatic drainage, which can prove immensely helpful in reducing facial puffiness, puffy eyes, and eye circles.
This treatment can also improve complexion and skin pigmentation, and reduce the appearance of facial scars and dark spots.
A single session of microcurrent therapy can take approximately an hour or so. About 10 to 15 sessions are required to notice significant improvement in skin tone.
No recovery time is required, which means that you can resume your day-to-day activities immediately after the treatment. Subsequent sessions can be required at regular intervals to maintain the results of the therapy.
Some individuals may not be able to get this facial treatment. People with some underlying skin diseases, as well as individuals with pacemaker, or a history of heart problems and epilepsy, may not be able to undergo microcurrent facial treatment.
Pregnant women are also advised to wait till delivery to get this treatment. So, before opting for this cosmetic procedure, it is better to talk to your physician.
