Numbness in Right Hand

Frequent numbness in hands can be a symptom of a serious medical condition. Here is information on the potential causes and treatment of numbness experienced in the right hand.
Numbness, in the simplest terms, is defined as loss of sensation in a part of the body. In most of the cases, numbness is found to be followed by tingling sensation.

Causes

In minor cases, sleeping in inappropriate position may exert pressure on the hand, leading to numbness after waking up in the morning. Apart from these, the following are the other severe causes of numbness in the right hand.

Injury

Injury is one of the most common causes of lack of sensation in hands. It can occur due to an accidental fall, blow or trauma. A bone fracture in the right hand can also lead to numbness. Extreme pain, swelling, etc., are the other possible symptoms.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS)

Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs when the nerves in the carpal tunnel are compressed. This condition develops due to repetitive use of wrist or arms in certain manner, like typing, playing tennis, etc. Numbness, tingling, burning sensation, etc., are its symptoms.

Electrolyte Imbalance

Vitamin and mineral deficiency can also lead to numbness in hands and feet. Deficiency of vitamins like B5, B6 and B12, vitamin A, and vitamin D, and imbalance of minerals like potassium, calcium, etc., leads to tingling in hands and feet.

Herniated Disc

Herniated disc is a condition that occurs when the disc placed between two consecutive vertebrae, gets ruptured or pressed. This condition is also known as the slipped disc or ruptured disc, and results in pain and numbness in limbs.

Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis arises when the nerves of the brain or the spinal cord are affected due to unknown reasons. This is a rare condition, and the symptoms include pain and numbness in hands, paralyzed limbs, blurred vision, etc.
Apart from the mentioned ones, Raynaud's syndrome, peripheral artery disease, Rheumatoid arthritis, etc., are other causes of numbness in hands. If a person observes any of these symptoms that persist for a longer period, he/she should consult the doctor immediately.

Treatment

The doctor will advise physical examination and X-ray to diagnose the condition. The treatment of injury depends on the cause and severity. In minor cases, it can be treated with painkillers, whereas in other cases, a surgery may be required.
Carpal tunnel syndrome can be treated with anti-inflammatory medications and physical therapy. People should also stop carrying out the activities that result in this condition.
Electrolyte imbalance can be treated by taking electrolyte supplements. Herniated disc can be treated with medications and physical therapy. Multiple sclerosis can be treated with the help of medications. Sometimes, dehydration may even lead to numbness. This can be treated and prevented by having adequate amounts of water every day.
As one observes, there can be several potential causes for this condition, it is advisable to not to ignore it. Numbness can be effectively treated if timely treatment is undertaken.
