Rutuja Jathar
Experiencing pain in the roof of your mouth is definitely discomforting, especially when the pain is prolonged. In this post, we are going to explore a few causes of this condition.
Palate is the exact word for what we colloquially refer to as the 'roof of the mouth'. Pain in the roof of mouth is actually a common condition experienced by many people, though for different reasons.
Most of the time, this pain is accompanied with a burning sensation or sores and elevated structures on the skin of the palate. Sometimes, the symptoms may become more evident after eating hot or spicy food or after waking up, especially if the person had been snoring. The exact symptoms would depend upon the underlying cause.

What Causes Pain in the Roof of Mouth

Burning Mouth Syndrome

Not a serious problem, burning mouth syndrome may lead to pain in the roof of mouth. The exact cause of this syndrome in unknown, but it is said to result from misinformation spread by the sensory nerves of the oral cavity.
It is also said to be caused due to oral yeast infection as well as anemia. If the pain is caused due to a yeast infection, then it is better to treat it on time, so that further complications are arrested.

Infections

Various kinds of infections may bring about pain in the roof of the mouth; the pain fades once the infection is treated. These infections may be both, viral as well as bacterial and affect the palate, making it sore.
Sinus infections, strep throat, common cold, staph, or any similar bacterial infections are some of the common reasons why a person may feel pain in the palate region.

Mouth Cancer

A more severe condition to deal with, this could cause a lot of pain in the entire mouth of the person. Mouth cancer is of two types; lymphoma and melanoma. Lymphoma is generally caused at the base of the tongue and around the tonsils region.

Other Reasons

There are numerous other reasons why a person may suffer from mouth roof pain.
Various allergies that attack insides of the mouth, ear infection, tooth abscess, mouth ulcers, diabetes, menopause, perimenopause, poorly fitting dentures, oral thrush, dry mouth, herpes, canker sores, vitamin deficiency, mineral deficiency, eating very spicy food, eating very hot food, chewing tobacco, and smoking are some reasons for roof of mouth pain.

Treatment for Palate Pain

If the causes are situational, then one needn't worry about it, since the pain will definitely go away once the reason is identified and dealt with. After eating very spicy food, one can eat a spoonful of yogurt. Yogurt is cool in nature and helps in alleviating the pain quite remarkably.
It is also a better treatment option if one is suffering from mouth ulcers or vitamin deficiencies. Try to consume vitamin C and vitamin E in good quantities to relieve the pain that may ensue. For the time being, avoid all sorts of hot and spicy foods that may cause more pain.
Pain in the roof of your mouth that's caused due to sinus infections or a tooth abscess may fade as soon as its root cause is treated. One should worry about it when the pain doesn't go away in a few days and keeps recurring, without any visible cause behind it.
In such a situation, it is always best to consult a health care provider and get the cause evaluated. I would rather suggest that you visit the doctor in any case, so that the pain doesn't aggravate. A doctor is the best judge, and will lead you towards the best path of treatment.
