A pimple or a sty can develop due to an infected sebaceous gland of an eyelid. A painful pimple on the eyelid is perhaps the most annoying situation, and an eyelid is probably the most irritating place to get a pimple. Read on to know the causes of an eyelid pimple and how to get rid of it.
Almost all the bumps on eyelids are sties. An inflammation of the oil gland on the edge of your eyelid can result in a pimple. The pimple is usually seen on the edge where the lashes meet the lids. You might have often noticed that the red, swollen bump is tender, especially to the touch. A pimple may develop on upper or lower eyelid. There can be one or more than one pimple on an eyelid. It can be either painful or non-painful.
This eye problem can be easily treated at home, but if the eyelid bump worsens or does not improve within a week or two of self-care, you should consult your doctor, as it is related to the vision. Mild pain, itching, sensitivity to light, tenderness of the eyelid, tearing, gritty, scratchy sensation, scale formation are the commonly observed symptoms of pimples on eyes. Washing the eye can be difficult due to the tenderness around the eye.

Causes

  • The oil glands in the eyelids provide lubrication to the tear film. Bacteria from skin can get into these glands. An infection leads to the inflammation of the gland, and a pimple or sty appears on the eyelid.
  • A sty when turns into a chalazion because of a fully blocked and inflamed oil gland, it requires prompt and proper treatment. A large chalazion can cause trouble with your vision.
  • Papillomas or pink or skin-colored bumps on eyelids are considered to be harmless. They can grow slowly and can affect your vision or bother you for cosmetic reasons. They can be surgically removed.
  • Usually a non-painful pimple on an eye is a result of the allergies of the eyes. Some chemical irritants and certain medications can lead to eye allergies.
  • Xanthelasma or yellow patches on the eyelids that appear with aging are harmless, although they are sometimes a sign of high cholesterol.
  • A white pimple on the edge of an eyelid is harmless. It can be caused due to milia.
  • Rosacea, which is characterized by skin redness, burning, and itching, can cause pimple on an eyelid.
  • Blepharitis can lead to pimple on the eye.
  • Psoriasis, staphylococcal bacteria, and sebborrheic dermatitis can lead to pimple on eye.
  • Dysfunction of meibomian glands or oil glands causes dry eyes. The condition can lead to the formation of pimples.
  • Cysts are the small fluid-filled sacs that can affect your vision.
  • Trauma or other eye problems like conjunctivitis and orbital cellulitis may lead to swollen eyelids or eye pimples.
  • Strong medicines, late nights, intake of oily and spicy food can result in pimple on face as well as on eyelid.

Treatment

  • Sties usually develop over a few days and drain and improve on their own.
  • Allergic blepharitis usually heals on its own.
  • Artificial tear solutions can sometimes provide relief to the eyes.
  • Never try to squeeze a sty or any other type of eyelid bump. Let it drain on its own.
  • Antibiotic creams may be beneficial for recurrent or persistent styes. Some large styes need to be lanced to drain the infection.
  • Strengthening the immune system with healthy and balanced diet can prevent recurrence of such pimples.
  • Sometimes, an infection or overproduction of fluid results in gland blockage. A simple surgery can be performed to remove the excess fluid. It helps alleviate the swelling.
  • Apply a clean, warm, damp cloth over closed eyelids for about ten minutes, two to four times daily. You can apply warm compresses over sties and chalazions, both.
  • If you follow the basics of eye care, like cleaning your eyelids with warm water and soft shampoo, at least twice daily, it will help cure the eyelid fast.
  • You may take oral antibiotics prescribed by your doctor or you may apply an antibiotic cream topically.
Following good hygiene is necessary to avoid formation of pimple on eyelid. Eye is the most delicate part of your body, and affected vision can destroy every aspect of your life.
