Everything You Need to Know About Proteinuria Treatment

Leena Palande
The condition wherein high levels of protein are found in urine is called proteinuria. Read on to know about proteinuria treatment, as it can affect anyone, children, adults, or even pregnant women.
Presence of a protein, albumin, in the urine indicates kidney problem, because kidneys work as filtering plants of the body. Proteinuria developed due to temporary causes, like over exposure to heat or cold, fever, excessive emotional or physical stress, cures on its own. Persistent protein in urine needs to be treated properly.
Foamy urine, swelling all over the body and fatigue are the main symptoms of this condition. Urinary tract problems, kidney diseases, and certain diseases, like diabetes, malaria, heart diseases, cancers, like leukemia, and diseases common in elderly people, like rheumatoid arthritis can lead to high protein in urine. So, proteinuria treatment mainly depends on the cause.

Glomerular

Glomeruli are the small capillaries in the kidneys, which are involved in the first step of blood filtration in the kidneys. If glomeruli are not functioning well, protein, and sometimes, red blood cells can leak into the urine (blood tinged urine).
When albumin is lost through urine, the capacity of the blood to absorb extra fluid from the body is seriously affected. The fluid starts accumulating outside the circulatory system, which leads to swelling all over the body. A urine test helps diagnose this condition.
Many people do not notice any symptoms until they come to know about the condition through a routine urine test. The treatment involves use of ACE inhibitors and following a low salt diet. Medicines, like Lisinopril (Zestril, Prinivil) are prescribed taking into consideration the age and severity of the condition.
ACE inhibitors (angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors) promote relaxation of the arteries and stimulate the process of excretion of salt and water. People with kidney diseases should keep their blood pressure below 130/80. They need to take blood pressure medicines, diuretics, and follow a proper diet.

Diabetic

If people with diabetes or hypertension have excess protein in urine, then the treatment involves use of ACE inhibitors, like captopril (Capoten). The ACE inhibitors prohibit conversion of 'angiotensin I' into 'angiotensin II', a substance that normally triggers constriction of the veins.
They thus help maintain the blood pressure. Doctors check the degree of proteinuria periodically and improve the dosage. Regular checking of blood sugar is also essential. Following a correct diet and performing exercises regularly helps lower the levels of urine protein.
Patients may develop cough as a side effect of the ACE inhibitor. In such cases, they can switch to Angiotensin Receptor Blockers (ARB). High protein in urine may affect kidney function seriously.

Orthostatic

This is a harmless condition, which is usually noticed in teenagers or older children. It is named orthostatic, because protein in urine is possible only when the child is in a stand-up position. There is no kidney damage. Urine sample taken during a day displays protein. But after lying down at night, protein is not found in the urine. The exact cause is unknown and normally, the condition doesn't require any treatment.
One may opt for homeopathic treatment. But if the child develops high blood pressure or swelling in the eyelids, ankles and legs, due to lack of protein in the body, he/she might have to take certain medicines to lower the symptoms. An improved diet may help restore the health. Persistent presence of protein in the urine of a child can be a symptom of a serious condition, and therefore should be treated properly.

Natural Treatment

Dehydration or alcohol abuse leads to an increase in the amount of protein in urine. Drinking plenty of water and limiting the intake of alcohol or avoiding alcohol can help. Overactive children are likely to develop this condition. They can be encouraged to do some sedentary activities. Over exposure to heat and cold can be avoided. A low salt diet helps lower the symptoms of this condition. They should consult the doctor and should follow the instructions religiously.
Persistent proteinuria can damage the kidneys resulting in several health complications. Bladder or urinary tract infection, high blood pressure late in the pregnancy (preeclampsia) can be avoided by taking precautionary measures. Herbal treatment includes use of herbal remedies, like Tribulus, Terrestris, and Rencare. The herbal ingredients help improve kidney function and the flow of the urine.
The above information regarding proteinuria treatment should be considered as a guideline. One who is diagnosed with this disorder needs to consult a doctor for proper treatment. Taking medicines without consulting a doctor may result in harmful side effects and health complications.
After checking the age and overall health of the patient, the doctor can prescribe medications and tell about the dosage. Moreover, the doctor can suggest dietary and lifestyle changes to avoid recurrence. So, consult your physician before taking medications.
