Causes of a Puffy Face

Facial swelling could be a sign of fluid retention, which in turn could be a symptom of hypothyroidism. This write-up lists out some of the common causes of a puffy face.
We all feel anxious when our facial skin is affected by acne or other skin disorders. Anything that affects our face is a cause of cosmetic concern. Facial swelling adversely affect the way we look. However, it shouldn’t be viewed as a cosmetic problem. It can be indicative of health problems. So, if your face looks puffy, it's advisable to consult a doctor.

Contributing Factors

Dehydration

When we do not drink adequate water, our body has this tendency to store in as much water as possible. So, if you have not been drinking sufficient water, it might show on your face. So, if you have not been drinking enough fluids, make sure that you increase your fluid intake. Also, avoid beverages like tea and coffee, which can dehydrate your body.

Diet

Facial swelling is a result of vitamin C deficiency. Excessive consumption of foods that are rich in fats also cause swelling on the face. So, follow a healthy diet that is rich in nutrients. Do not forget to incorporate vitamin C rich foods in your daily diet.

Alcohol

It is a well-established fact that alcohol leads to dehydration. Alcohol siphons off every drop of water in your body, thereby causing excessive thirst and dehydration.
You are most likely to wake up with a puffy face, when you have had a few drinks, the previous night. So, cut down your consumption of alcohol. That will benefit you in more than one way.

Kidney Diseases

Malfunction of kidneys could be responsible for causing fluid retention. Diabetes and high blood pressure are the leading causes of kidney disease, which is why individuals affected by diabetes and hypertension should consult a doctor in case of edema.

Hypothyroidism

Hypothyroidism is yet another reason for facial swelling. Hypothyroidism, often leads to sudden weight gain, which explains the swelling on the face. If you have been experiencing other symptoms of hypothyroidism such as fatigue, dry skin, constipation, etc., seek medical help at the earliest.

Cushing's Syndrome

A rare condition, Cushing's syndrome is characterized by a perfectly round, puffy face. It results from prolonged exposure to elevated levels of cortisol, a hormone that is secreted by adrenal gland. This could be due to the excessive intake of oral steroids or medications that are taken to treat inflammatory diseases.
