Reasons for Nausea

Stomach disorders and pregnancy are the most common reasons for nausea. It is important to know the proper underlying cause so as to get proper treatment.
Nausea is the discomfort and feeling of unease, specially in the stomach, which can be caused due to a variety of reasons. It is a common condition caused due to a variety of reasons. Most of the time, it is found that nausea is accompanied by other symptoms like headache and vomiting.

Causes

In minor cases, consuming half-cooked or spoiled food, exposure to strong odors, sea sickness, and acrophobia are the most common causes of nausea. These are rarely serious medical conditions. But, there are certain conditions that need medical consultation and treatment.

Pregnancy

Nausea in pregnancy is commonly known as morning sickness. Its exact cause is unknown; however, it is believed that the hormonal changes in the body during pregnancy lead to the discomfort. During pregnancy, women tend to become more sensitive to odors and food, which often leads to nausea.

Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is a rheumatoid disorder which is characterized by muscle and joint pain. Although the exact cause of fibromyalgia in not known. Genetics, abnormal functioning of the central nervous system, and stress are believed to be the potential causes. Chronic pain in muscles and joints, nausea, anxiety, insomnia, etc., are the other symptoms of fibromyalgia.

Gastroenteritis

Gastroenteritis, or stomach flu, is another common cause. Gastroenteritis is the inflammation of the stomach, caused due to bacterial infection. Eating contaminated, half-cooked or spoiled food is the most common cause of gastroenteritis.
Food poisoning and gastroenteritis are closely related to each other. Gastroenteritis is more commonly seen in children and young adults. Vomiting, headache, slight fever, diarrhea, loss of appetite, and nausea are its symptoms.

Alcohol Intoxication

Excessive intake of alcohol results in nausea, sickness, and the general feeling of illness. It is specially seen in first timers. Headache and nausea are also common symptoms of a hangover and also that of alcohol withdrawal.

Ear Infections

Although one may not easily relate it with ear infection, it is found that infection or inflammation in the middle ear leads to constant nausea. Viral or bacterial infection in the ear or damage to the internal ear due to trauma are some of the uncommon reasons for nausea. Pain in the ear, bleeding, fever, chills, and vertigo are the other symptoms of ear infection.

Treatment for Nausea

Short-term nausea can be overcome by taking rest or taking any of the over-the-counter medications. However, if one is feeling nauseous for a long time, or constantly has the bouts of nausea, he should consult the doctor as early as possible.
The doctor will diagnose the exact cause on the basis of other symptoms experienced. Sometimes, physical examination and urine tests also prove equally beneficial.
Solid food should be avoided until vomiting and diarrhea stops. In case you feel nauseous due to any medication, you should inform the doctor. In case of pregnancy, the woman should consult a gynecologist for proper treatment.
Gastroenteritis can be treated with the help of medication. Alcohol consumption should be completely stopped to avoid the nausea associated with it.
As a concluding note, one should remember that nausea can be treated by proper and timely treatment. It is recommended to consult the doctor before taking any medication or drugs.
