Recurring Sinus Infections

Sinus infections, also known as sinusitis, are defined as the regular and frequent inflammation of the various sinuses present in the face. There are numerous cavities and pressure points that are present in the bones of the face, which produce mucous that is passed into the nasal passages. Throughout the course of a day, this liquid is frequently swallowed by an individual, but upon inflammation of these cavities the potential of an infection is very high.

These infections usually occur due to blockage of the drainage sites of the mucous. This causes the mucous to flow out from a persons nasal passage, thus resulting in a runny nose. People who are afflicted by this condition, have to face a lot of difficulties and discomfort, as it can be a very disruptive condition to have.

The most common causes are those related to a viral infection. Even bacterial infections or allergies may lead to this condition. The presence of a common cold expands the sinus membranes, and therefore blocks the paths. The collecting mucous is an ideal place for bacteria to thrive, and thereby spread the infection. Some people experience the growth of small masses along their sinus membranes, known as nasal polyps. These also block the passages and thus cause sinusitis. Some other medical conditions like the HIV, cystic fibrosis, and other immunodeficiency diseases can also cause a blockage of the sinus membranes.

The treatment may depend on the severity of the condition of the person. Even the frequency with which the individual experiences a runny nose and other symptoms, may help determine the appropriate treatment. The following tips may help alleviate the symptoms:

• Drink lots of liquids throughout the day. This will minimize the viscosity of the mucous and enable it to flow out easily.
• Inhale steam to clear out blocked sinus passages.
• Apply a slightly wet cloth dipped in warm water on your face several times a day.
• Use a nasal saline spray.

• Use a nasal decongestant spray. Do not over use this though, as it has many other side effects.
• Avoid sudden and extreme changes in temperature.
• Avoid flying if you are afflicted by this condition.
• For infections in children, some antibiotics can also be administered after consultation with a doctor.

• People with allergies can receive some allergy shots to cure the condition quickly.
• One of the best and most natural treatment is to simply sleep for a while. After some time, the nasal passages will clear up on their own.

This condition is usually self curable. Once the pattern of recurrence of the infection has been observed, the best mode of treatment can be decided. It is important to ascertain the exact cause of the infections at a fairly early stage. Leaving the diagnosis for a later stage will invariably result in the infection getting worse over a period of time. Like all other medical conditions, this one also requires prompt action and responsible observation.
