Red blotches on skin is a condition experienced by people of all ages, and can affect almost all parts of the body. In some cases, these tend to become chronic, which makes treatment difficult. Different skin problems like itching, irritation of the skin, mild inflammation and burning sensation around the blotches, etc. may also accompany them.
In the initial stages, tiny bumps develop on the skin, and are sometimes accompanied with irritation. After a period of 2 to 3 days, the irritation increases, and blotches are formed. If the blotches are too many, then they might overlap and spread all over the body.
Sometimes, they are extremely intense in the morning, and tend to become milder as the day progresses. Several factors including allergies and infections can lead to the development of such a condition. A few common causes and the corresponding treatments are given here.

Causes

  • An allergic reaction due to a particular type of clothing, food, jewelry, drug, grass, herb, insect, etc. may lead to the development of rash and spots.
  • People who indulge in heavy exercise are prone to blotches on arms and legs.
  • Prolonged exposure to sun (UV rays) can lead to the development of blotches, especially in people with sensitive skin.
  • Acne, rosacea, allergic contact dermatitis as well as the initial stages of infectious diseases like chickenpox, measles, leishmaniasis, scabies, etc. are also characterized by formation of red blotches.

Prevention and Treatment

  • Ointments and creams with hydrocortisone are generally prescribed to relieve the symptoms, including burning and itching of the affected area of the skin.
  • In case of allergic reactions, identifying the right allergen, and avoiding exposure to that element is the ideal way out. If the exposure is unavoidable, the necessary precautions must be taken, namely the use of protective wear, sunblock or suntan lotions, etc.
  • If red blotches are the result of an infection, it is advisable to consult a medical expert, and undergo the necessary lab tests to identify the agent. The precise therapy and set of anti-microbial drugs depend on the infectious agent and the stage of the infection.
  • To prevent transmission of infection to others, it is necessary to keep the infected area clean, and refrain from sharing personal items, clothes, and toiletries.
  • Diet, good personal hygiene, and clean surroundings also play an important role to keep skin infections and allergies at bay.
Red skin blotches can be the result of a simple allergy that may alleviate on its own, or can be an indication of a serious chronic allergy or infection. It is best to observe the changes, and take the necessary steps, if any abnormality is suspected.
