Aastha Dogra
A red tongue tip can indicate anything, right from a tongue problem to a vitamin deficiency to a digestion problem. Read through this story to know more about its causes as well as remedies.
Our tongue performs a variety of functions such as tasting food, licking, swallowing, moisturizing, mastication of food, and speaking. Besides these functions, there is another thing that the tongue does, and that is―its surface is a diagnostic tool which indicates the health and condition of the various organs of the digestive system.
The color of the surface of the tongue, which is normally pink, might change to red or white, if a person is suffering from some kind of tongue problems. A red tongue tip, instead of a pink one, can occur in people due to a number of reasons, these have been explained below, along with the remedies to restore it back to normal.

Increase of Heat

A very common phenomenon that results in the tongue tip turning red is due to an increase of heat in the body. Heat could be caused due to a number of reasons, the most common of which is eating spicy and oily food. Other than that, maintaining late nights can also increase the heat in the body.
Make sure to maintain healthy sleeping hours, and consume food like leafy vegetables instead of red meats, as well as fruits with high water content―these will lower the heat in the body, as well as avoid those foods that increase the heat. Combined, it will lead to solving the redness or the red spots on the tip of the tongue.

Stress

A red tongue tip indicates that a person is emotionally disturbed. It is commonly observed that people who suffer from stress or anxiety or are under some kind of depression, often develop a very bright-colored tip of the tongue. A person who is experiencing this condition should include vitamin B rich foods in his diet because these help greatly.
Foods such as brown rice, whole grains, beans and root vegetables are rich sources of vitamin B and hence should be taken regularly. Along with these, for stress relief, certain measures such as yoga and meditation should be undertaken by the person too.

Vitamin B6 Deficiency

If a person has a red and sore tongue tip, the reason could be a deficiency of vitamin B6, niacin or iron in the body. If any of these essential nutrients is lacking in the diet, a person might get a sore red tongue tip. To overcome this deficiency, nettle teas or dandelion teas should be included in the diet, along with vitamin B6 rich foods such as brown rice, avocados, buckwheat, beet root, and sunflower seeds.

Intake of Acidic Foods

Red bumps on tip of tongue could result from eating foods which are very spicy or acidic in nature. Usually, these red tongue sores resulting from eating acidic foods, are not due to any kind of allergy, and all a person has to do in order to get rid of them is eliminate such foods from the diet which has caused them.

Atrophic Glossitis

This condition is usually experienced by people in their senior years. When people suffering from this condition eat certain foods which are sharp in taste, they experience a burning sensation in the tongue. Physically, the top surface of the tongue turns red in color and becomes somewhat beefy.
This change in color is due to the lack of filiform papillae, which gives the tongue its pink color and smooth appearance. In order to relieve the symptoms of atrophic glossitis, a person should take multi-vitamin tablets which supply the body with nutrients such as folic acid, vitamin B12, niacin, riboflavin, pyroxidine, and iron.

Geographic Tongue

This tongue problem is very common and is usually genetic. In this condition, red color patches develop on the tongue which have a distinct margin. On these red patches, the papillae are reduced. These red patches are found at the sides of the tongue in some people, while in others, they are found on the tip.
This condition is not a disease and hence requires no treatment. It is something normal and the person experiencing it does not need to worry about it at all as it does not produce any negative symptoms.
As can be seen from above, a sore red tongue tip can occur due to a variety of deficiencies or problems in the body. So, it is rightly said that our tongue is a good way to determine our overall health condition. Thus, upon experiencing any kind of change in the color, texture or appearance of the tongue, a doctor should be consulted without fail to diagnose the real problem.
