Redness around the nose is generally not considered to be a serious concern. However, in certain cases, it may be an indication of some underlying disorder.
Occasional occurrence of redness around the nose, is not a serious condition, especially during winters. However, it might become a matter of concern, when it occurs for no apparent reason, or occurs frequently.
Causes
» If the redness is accompanied with a bulb-shaped appearance of the nose, then it may indicate rhinophyma, which is usually manifested as a complication of rosacea (an autoimmune disease).
» The next common cause of redness around the nose and/or mouth is an acne breakout. This is generally accompanied with a mild swelling at the affected site.
» Another etiological factor is alcohol flush reaction that occurs in response to alcohol consumption, especially among Asians.
» Scarlet fever, which is caused by the bacterium Streptococcus pyogenes, involves redness of the cheeks, nose, and tongue.
» Other causes include nose piercings, sunburn, Cushing's syndrome, Rubella or German measles, allergic reaction, eczema, etc., as well as an adverse reaction of certain drugs.
Treatment
The treatment prescribed depends on the underlying etiology. In case of rosacea, and rhinophyma, topical medication may be prescribed to reduce the redness. Antibiotics may be recommended in case of infections.
Apart from following the prescribed treatment methods, patients must ensure that they follow certain self-care measures as well. The simple ones include using sunscreen to avoid sunburn, use of suitable protection during cold weather, and drinking plenty of water throughout the day in order to keep the skin moist and the body hydrated.
