Mayuri Kulkarni
Reversing a gum disease is possible if the treatment is provided in its early stages. Here are some home remedies that can help.
A gum disease is basically a bacterial infection that affects the tooth structure, especially the structures that hold the teeth in place. These include the gums, the ligaments, and the bones that hold the teeth in the mouth. A gum disease can be a minor inflammation or a serious infection that can cause the loss of a tooth.
But reversing a gum disease is possible if it is diagnosed early and treated with appropriate methods.

Stages and Causes

A gum disease affects the oral structure in various stages, gingivitis being the first stage. Gingivitis is a non-destructive gum disease that causes the gums to become red and inflamed. This can also cause bleeding around the gums while brushing the teeth.
When gingivitis goes untreated, it leads to a serious condition called periodontitis. This is the stage of gum disease that affects the bones that hold the teeth. It can make the affected tooth shaky, and can further cause it to fall out, if untreated.
A major problem is the formation of plaque around the teeth. This is basically due to improper oral care and irregular brushing of the teeth. Plaque is a sticky layer formed due to the accumulation of bacteria around the teeth. Smoking causes a block in the oxygen flow in the bloodstream, and thus slows the healing process of any gum disease.

How to Reverse Gum Disease Naturally

Now, the first thing that should be done when a gum disease is diagnosed is to brush the teeth at least twice day. This is necessary to remove the infectious plaque accumulated around the teeth. One should rinse with an antibacterial mouthwash after having meals.
This helps ensure that no bacteria is left in the mouth.

Any gum disease is actually an action of the bacteria formed from the food stuck in the teeth. Foods like refined sugar and flour products produce more bacteria as compared to others. Thus, one should also keep an eye on the food consumed.
Fresh fruits and vegetables that are high in minerals, vitamins, antioxidants, fibers, etc., are very helpful in maintaining a good oral hygiene.

Foods high in calcium and vitamin C help fight a bacterial infection, and also aid in gum healing process. Thus, one should follow a healthy sugar-free diet to reverse the issue.
If the bacterial infection has advanced or has affected the bone that holds the teeth, then a reversal may not be possible. Thus, whenever you doubt that your gums are infected, you should make an immediate appointment with a dentist. The analysis made by the dentist can help detect the stage of the issue.
Gum disease can cause severe consequences if left untreated. Studies have shown that the bacteria that cause oral infections can infect the heart valves and lead to fatal problems like heart disease or even death.
