Severe Constipation

Madhura Pandit
Severe and frequent constipation can be a possible sign of an underlying health condition. This story provides the causes and remedies for the same.
Constipation is defined as a condition where a person has difficulty in passing stools. The person may find it difficult to pass stools regularly and do it only 3-4 times a week or pass extremely hard stools which may cause pain. Constipation can be a condition in itself or a symptom of some other gastrointestinal disorder.
It is a fairly common condition which is not life-threatening and can be treated with the help of medications as well as home remedies. However, one should note that it is equally important to follow preventive measures in order to prevent this condition from being severe. Constipation, if not treated quickly, can turn severe or chronic.

Causes of Acute Constipation

Having a diet lacking in fiber is one of the most common causes of constipation. People tend to eat foods that are high in carbohydrates (bread, rice, pasta) and do not include fibers in any form in the diet. Fibers help in softening stools as well as help in the movement of bowels.
Secondly, having less amounts of water and liquids also obstructs proper bowel movement. Constipation during pregnancy is also one of the most common conditions experienced by all women.
On the other hand, lack of exercise, certain diseases like irritable bowel syndrome, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, use of certain medications, etc., are some of the other possible causes. Ignoring the urge to pass stools and having irregular bowel habits are the causes of severe constipation in children.

Symptoms

As mentioned above, difficulty in passing stools is one of the constipation symptoms observed in case of children and adults. Apart from that, the following are the other symptoms that are observed.
  • Inability to empty the bowel fully
  • Passing very hard stools
  • Pain while passing stools
  • Pain in lower abdomen
  • Stomach cramps
  • Nausea
  • Bloating
  • Loss of appetite

Remedies

If one observes any of these symptoms, he should consult the doctor in order to get the condition diagnosed quickly. If it is caused as a symptom of some other disorder, it is essential to take proper treatment as soon as possible. On the other hand, if it is caused due to other reasons, one can go for medications and natural remedies.
Laxatives are often prescribed to treat constipation. Secondly, note that having a fiber rich diet (inclusive of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains) helps in the treatment and prevention of constipation. Having a glass of warm lemon water mixed with honey in the morning, having 100 grams of grapes every day, etc., are also some of the best cures.
Apart from these treatment methods, you also need to follow preventive measures. Firstly, you should include fibers in the diet every day and also have sufficient amounts of water.
Secondly, you should reduce the amounts of foods causing constipation like banana, products made from refined flour, most of the baked products, etc. Pregnant women should go for a walk and have a healthy diet to prevent constipation.
Lastly, as a concluding note, one should remember that having a proper and healthy diet and exercising regularly helps in getting rid of constipation in adults as well as children. Take care!
