Sinus Drainage Symptoms

We all experience nasal discharge on a daily basis. The sinuses secrete a particular amount of mucus that is used to line the nasal passages and keep them clear of any blockages. However, the discharge is more when the nasal passage gets infected by any bacterium or virus, or due to a head injury, nasal polyps, sinusitis, or any object in the passage.

In such cases, the discharge may occur in the form of nasal secretion (from the nose), or in the form of post nasal drip (at the back of the throat). While some amount of mucus secretion is normal, excess secretion can cause discomfort. The discharge of liquid from the sinus is the body's mechanism of removing any foreign substance from the nasal passage.

Sinus drainage may be the result of sinus infection caused by bacteria or viruses, or an allergy. These phenomena lead to the inflammation of the sinuses, thereby increasing the risk of a sinus infection. Usually sinus drainage is meant to provide relief from the aforementioned conditions, but an excess discharge results in a lot of discomfort causing the following symptoms.

• One of the symptoms is post nasal drip, where the mucus begins to collect at the back of the throat and may flow into the stomach. In such a case, you may experience congestion of the chest, as well as stomach discomfort.

• Another common issue in this condition is cough which is a result of post nasal drip, it is also likely to cause cough. As the dischrage goes down the back of the throat, it results in itchiness and irritation in the throat, and this causes cough so that the throat can be cleared.

• Sore throat is another common symptom, which causes trouble in talking, swallowing, and sometimes breathing too.

• If you are experiencing sinus drainage, it is likely that you will find yourself sneezing a lot. The excess mucus in the sinuses can cause the nose to itch and cause irritation, resulting in a bout of sneezing. In another case, if the condition has been caused due to allergies, sneezing may be a symptom or an effect of this allergy.

• If sinus drainage occurs in the form of nasal secretion, then one of the symptoms is going to be a runny nose, which can be cleared upon blowing it.

• However, it is likely that this may also get uncomfortable after a while, for which you will have to resort to some treatment methods to cure yourself of this condition.
• Sinus drainage is also likely to cause bad breath due to the accumulation of mucus in the sinuses.

• In rare cases you may experience nausea. This condition may also cause headaches, and if the headache becomes severe it may result in feelings of nausea and vomiting. Nausea is an uncommon symptom, but may occur in some nonetheless. Usually the feeling of nausea goes away when the sinuses are cleared.

In most cases, some home remedies may take care of the symptoms, after which you will be able to breathe freely. However, if the condition doesn't improve, it is advisable to visit a doctor and get appropriate medication to cure the condition.
