Sinusitis and Dizziness

Sinuses are small air cavities located within the facial bones and have a crucial role to play in the respiratory system. It traps debris and other unwanted substances and prevent them from entering our body through nasal passage.

When there is an inflammation in one or more of these sinuses, it is known as sinusitis. It happens when the cells of the sinus lining are damaged by common cold virus or various allergens like dust, mold, pollen, chemicals, etc.

As a result, bacteria and mucus block the cavities and lead to infection. In this condition, if the fluid buildup inside these cavities start disturbing the ears, it causes dizziness due to sinus infection.

Sinusitis causes a constant irritation in the sinus cavity and shows symptoms like runny nose, repeated sneezing, post nasal drip, nasal congestion, cough, etc. Common cold viral infection may also cause fever, fatigue, and general weakness. Some people also experience pain in teeth and jaws.

The dizzy feeling along with sinusitis is often referred to as vertigo. It can be described as a sense of lightheadedness and instability that makes it difficult to maintain the body balance. It often happens when the infection of sinus spreads to the ears.

Sometimes, it can be induced by inflammation of tissues near the eyelids due to sinus infection. In this condition, the patients complain of headaches after getting up in the morning, which is triggered by heavily inflamed eyelids.

When you are suffering from a sinus infection, then the most important thing required by your body is an ample amount of rest. The dizziness caused by sinus infection gives such an uncomfortable feeling that you cannot focus on any work properly.

Therefore, it is advisable to suspend all activities and take rest. The main aim of the treatment is to cure the sinus infection as early as possible. Once the sinus is free from infection, its symptoms like dizziness would disappear on its own.

When the origin of infection is bacteria, then oral antibiotics are often administered to fight the infection. These medicines get mixed into the blood stream, reach the site of infection, and destroy the infection causing microorganisms.

While using antibiotics for sinus infection, make sure that you have to complete the entire prescription of the medicine even if the symptoms are gone.

If it is caused by virus, then it takes longer to get cured as antibiotics are ineffective on them. In that case, efforts are made to reduce the inflammation of the sinus. To provide relief from the nasal congestion, nasal sprays and decongestants are proved to be quite effective.

An excellent home remedy to get instant relief from nasal congestion is inhalation of steam. You can put a few drops of eucalyptus oil into the hot water, which will help you get rid of the sinus headache as well.

In chronic sinusitis and dizziness cases, where infections tend to recur, doctors resort to sinus surgery as a last option. It is conducted by an ENT (Ear, Nose, and Throat) specialist who removes the inflamed part of the sinus so that the infection does not recur in future.

With proper treatment, the infection will subside within two weeks. Once you are relieved from it, try to make efforts to prevent its recurrence. For this, eat healthy foods, take nutritional supplements, and do regular exercises to strengthen your immune system. It is also important to avoid all those factors that can cause allergies and affect the sinus.
