What Causes Skin Irritation

Shalu Bhatti
Are you suffering from skin irritation and wondering what the possible cause(s) could be? Well, there is more to this problem than dust allergy or insect bites. This story will tell you all about the causes, symptoms, and treatment of this problem.
We all tend to be affected by some form of mild skin irritant, almost every other day. It could be because of an allergy, a reaction, or perhaps, a bug bite. But, when it comes to those severe cases, wherein it becomes a prominent issue, it is important to know all the possible causes and cures to prevent future instances of this botheration.
Skin irritation can be associated with a wide number of disorders and diseases. It is usually accompanied by red rashes that itch and lead to inflammation after being scratched vigorously, which is in extreme cases. If you are suffering from mild irritation, then it generally subsides within a day or two. However, severe cases may need medical attention.

Causes

The skin is the largest organ of the human body. Yes, it is an organ because it actually breathes and absorbs many things around it. It is spread all over the body only to perform its primary function―to protect us from the harmful effects of the external environment.
Irritation occurs when the skin gets exposed to some harmful elements. These could include the following.
  • Detergents
  • Dyes
  • Certain chemicals
  • Medications
  • Perfumes or sprays
  • Soaps
  • Exposure to extremely hot/cold conditions
  • Frequent contact with water during washing or cleaning
  • Plants
  • Animals
  • Rough or synthetic fabrics
  • Infection
  • Stress
  • Hormonal problems
  • Bug bites
  • Skin diseases including eczema, psoriasis, etc.

Symptoms

Depending upon the severity of the condition, the symptoms also vary. Mentioned below are some common ones.
  • Burning
  • Tingling
  • Itchy rash
  • Redness
  • Inflammation
  • Dryness and scaliness
  • Pain
  • Changed texture

Treatment

If the irritation is mild, then it usually subsides within a few days. However, it is advisable not to avoid it, especially, if it seems to give you a lot of trouble. Consulting your skin care specialist would be the best option, as it is essential to diagnose the exact cause to start accurate treatment.
The treatment includes over-the-counter medications as well as prescribed drugs. Some home remedies may also help.
  • Antibiotics: If the cause is an allergy or an infection, then consuming antibiotics or applying ointments directly on the affected area may prove to be of help.
  • Precautions: If the causal factors include exposure to dust, plant, or an animal, then be sure to stay away from the source. Applying ointments and consuming prescribed medications would subside the irritation.
  • Lotions: There are many over-the-counter lotions, which consist of both calamine lotions and/or moisturizing lotions (in case of dry or scaly skin). These can help treat the rash.
  • Steroids: If the condition is extremely serious, then your skin care specialist may use steroids, such as cortisone and prednisone, to subside the irritation. This is done when one shows severe symptoms including blisters, redness, and wounds resulting from scratching.
  • Natural Remedies: There are many natural remedies, which include using aloe vera, avocado oil, tea tree oil, olive oil, jojoba oil, honey, etc., which can cure this problem by continuously rubbing on the affected area. Applying a paste of baking soda mixed with water, or finely-grounded oats, can also prove to be of help.
Skin irritation should be treated within the initial period only, in order to avoid further problems. Do consult your doctor as soon as possible to get the right treatment at the right time.
