Are you experiencing severe abdominal cramping but unable to identify the exact cause behind it? Well, it could be due to excessive accumulation of intestinal gas in your stomach. This story tells you about the causes and symptoms of this stomach problem, and also, treatment options available for the same.
Gas is often a byproduct of the process of digestion. Normally, it often finds its way out of the body on its own. However, in some people, gas may go on accumulating in the stomach, which leads to severe pain and cramping. Gas cramps mostly stem from conditions, like, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), constipation, indigestion, etc. It is often the first sign of any stomach disorder.

Causes

As mentioned before, gas results out of the normal digestion mechanism. At times, gas also enters your stomach due to swallowing too much of air. This air is released back in the form of belching, and is an absolutely normal activity. Gas resulting as a product of digestion often forms due to partial digestion of certain foodstuffs.
High-fiber foods, such as, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, beans, onions, carbonated beverages, caffeine, artificially sweetened foods, etc., have a very high potential of inducing gases. These foods cannot be digested completely, as a result, they are broken down by the bacteria in the stomach.
This leads to the formation of gas. As the gas tries to escape, it induces severe pain or cramping. Sometimes, viral infections or stomach flu can also lead to gas accumulation in the stomach. This stomach ailment is pretty common in pregnant women.

Symptoms

Bloating or abdominal distention is the first symptom of gas formation. Bloated or 'full' tummy causes uneasiness in the stomach. Belching and flatulence is also common in an attempt to release gas. But the most important symptom is a sharp, jabbing abdominal pain.
There is a knotted feeling or a feeling of tightness in the stomach. Sometimes, the pain is so severe that the person may feel as though, he is about to faint. As the gas moves inside the stomach, the cramping can be felt in that region.

Treatment

Cramping in the stomach can be controlled by positioning your body appropriately. Laying on your left side, helps the gas to move towards the colon, from where it can be passed. Pulling your legs up to your chest also helps in the release of the gas.
If you have a history of this disorder and you experience gas trouble after eating certain foods, then those foods must be avoided. Some over-the-counter medications may help in alleviating the symptoms of gas. There are also certain supplements that help cure cramps resulting due to specific foods, such as, beans or dairy products.
Also, there are some home remedies that can efficiently fight the problem of gas. Adding a dash of cayenne pepper on foods or sprinkling black pepper in soups or other beverages can considerably reduce the problem of cramps. Another effective remedy for severe pain is carom seeds.
Heat a spoonful of carom seeds in a pan and chew them on, followed by a glass of warm water. All varieties of mint are also effective in curing the pain associated with gas. Similarly, ginger reduces the nausea and uneasiness that might result due to gas formation in the belly.
Gas trouble is often considered pretty normal, and one tends to forget about it as soon as the symptoms subside. However, persistent cramping and pain due to this condition, could be an indication of some serious disorder. Therefore, it is better to get yourself checked by a qualified doctor, who may help you to identify the underlying cause.
