Any nasal congestion causing breathing problems lead to a stuffy dry nose. It can be caused due to change in weather. To know its causes, signs, and home remedies, read this Story.
A stuffy dry nose is a nasal clogging caused due to swelling of the inner membranes of the nose. Infections caused by certain bacteria and viruses entering the upper respiratory tract through dust can lead to this condition.
Also, decreased sinus ventilation as a result of allergies, hay fever, common cold, sinusitis, or any other infection may also cause nasal congestion. Immediate diagnosis is essential to rule out diseases, like deviated nasal septum, swine flu, influenza, etc., and the line of treatment is decided based on the causative factor.

Causes

Most of the time, this problem is caused due to a change in the weather. A slight decrease in humidity can expand the blood vessels in the nasal region and lead to this. Allergies to strong perfumes, tobacco smoke, chemical fumes, and other fragrances can also clog your nose.
In case of sinus infection, symptoms, like headache, facial tenderness, and yellow nasal discharge may occur. Apart from this, adenoids, nasal polyps, thyroid problems, and high blood pressure can also cause nasal congestion. Acute signs can be treated at an early stage by using some of the home remedies mentioned.

Remedies

  • Use of saline drops is safe and can be used around 3-4 times daily. These drops provide moisture, thereby unclogging the nose. Saline drops are available in any drugstores.
  • A humidifier is recommended for breathing problems caused by excessive dry air. It provides the necessary moisture so as to facilitate proper breathing and a sound sleep too.
  • Eucalyptus oil or Yarrow herb when added to hot water generates steam, that can help cure this problem.
  • Mix garlic and aloe vera juice together and add some honey to it. Now, dip two cotton balls in the above mixture, and put them in your nostrils for some time. This will help in unblocking the stuffed nostrils.
  • Also, try adding some turmeric powder in a cup of milk and drink it at least twice a day. Turmeric acts as an anti-inflammatory agent that helps you recover quickly. It also clears the lungs, stimulates the functions of the liver, and cures weakness.
  • Smelling onion helps unclog the congestion in nasal membranes.

When To Consult Your Doctor

It's time to see a doctor if the nasal congestion further develops into a thick, yellowish mucus. Additional symptoms, like sleep deprivation, fever, and post-nasal drip are indicators that you would definitely need medical help.
If you are recurrently afflicted by this allergy, then take the medicines prescribed by your doctor. It is advisable to use decongestant nasal sprays that will help unblock the nasal congestion. Allergic shots are also prescribed in case of allergy.
Since this condition is contagious, it's best to avoid contact with infected individuals to avoid spread of infection through coughing, sneezing etc.
  • Wash your hands whenever you come in contact with the infected person.
  • Follow a healthy and balanced diet.
  • Drink a lot of hot beverages, like tea, coffee, or soups.
  • Take enough rest.
Consult your doctor for proper diagnosis and treatment if the condition does not subside with herbal remedies.
