Sudden Dizziness

Charlie S
An unexpected spell of dizziness knocks you out of action for a little while, making you wonder about what brought it on. This story explains the reasons behind sudden dizziness attacks.
Dizziness can be categorized broadly into two types. There is one instance of fainting or feeling disoriented. The other is vertigo, which feels like your head is spinning, or that your surroundings are moving. A person suffering from dizziness has very low concentration and enthusiasm levels.
People with dizziness experience general weakness, tiredness, and a confused state of mind. It is possible to treat this condition provided it is detected early by careful observation of the symptoms.
In fact, the symptoms hold the key to correct diagnosis, as your doctor is sure to inform you. Therefore, take note of the type of fainting spells you suffer from, in order to accurately understand the cause behind it.

Accompanying Symptoms of Dizziness

  • Numbness of the face, severe pain in the head, pain in the eyes, unclear vision, and a feeling of light-headedness are the prominent symptoms of dizziness.
  • Many people also suffer from clumsiness, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, and palpitations, which are also widely observed symptoms.
  • Several health professionals detect the condition from observations such as dehydration, problems while walking and sleeping, frequent feeling of thirst, improper and abnormal movements of the eye, and low levels of consciousness.
  • According to medical research, the condition of dizziness can, at times, be accompanied by other symptoms like hyperventilation, weakness, irregular pulse, an unusual feeling of spinning or whirling of the surroundings, chest pain, jaw pain, chills, sweating, and shortness of breath.

What Causes Dizziness?

The most prominent causes of dizziness include -
  • Dehydration
  • Vertigo
  • Low blood pressure
  • Low blood sugar level
  • Stroke
Additionally, fainting can also be a side effect of certain medicines. The intake of medicines which cause blockage of the adrenaline receptors in the heart, is known to cause dizziness in some people.
Dizziness can be a result of prolonged exposure to harsh sunlight, which is some cases can cause a heat stroke. In such cases, it is very necessary to keep the body amply hydrated.
Pregnant women are also prone to have fainting spells that are brought upon by low blood pressure, fatigue or exhaustion. It is necessary to report these symptoms to the doctor to rule out the possibility of any underlying complication.
Older people usually tend to feel dizzy when they suddenly get up from a seated position, or even when they get out of bed. This is normally not a cause for concern, as long as the dizziness does not lead to accidents. So, seniors are well-advised against hastily getting out of bed or a chair, or making any sudden movements without any physical support.
The disorders and diseases related to the heart such as cardiac arrhythmia, too rapid or too slow heartbeat, and heart attack are also among the known causes of dizziness in some people.

Vertigo

The sensation of vertigo can be triggered by different reasons, ranging from migraines to infections in the inner part of the ear. In most cases, vertigo is brought upon by a fluctuation in the vestibular system.
Excessive accumulation of fluid in the ears, known as Meniere's disease can cause vertigo. Isolated cases have even shown vertigo to be a symptom of a more complicated neurological issue.

Treatment for Dizziness

  • The underlying cause of the fainting episodes will point to the appropriate remedy. In basic instances, when exhaustion or fatigue is the reason behind dizziness, a long spell of total rest and healthy eating is prescribed. The person should refrain from activities that cause stress, and try to make lifestyle changes.
  • Drinking plenty of water (around ten glasses a day) is the best way of dealing with dizziness caused by dehydration. Avoiding the consumption of caffeinated beverages and alcohol is recommended.
  • Exercising regularly is one of the best and easiest methods to cope with this condition. Aerobic exercises, especially, can prove to be very effective.
  • Most medical practitioners advice to consume fruits which are rich in Vitamin A and Vitamin C to avoid dizziness. Apart from these vitamins, Vitamin B12, and folic acid are also equally important.
  • It is extremely important to report changes in your health condition to your doctor, and follow the instructions related to diet and lifestyle.
Constant dizziness is usually a passing phase in a person's life and it gets cured in a few weeks, in most cases. Follow the dos and don'ts of healthy living, and you can easily get over this problem.
