Sweat is defined as a clear and salty liquid which is produced by sudoriferous glands in your skin. The process of its release from the body is called sweating. It is also known as perspiration. This is the natural process by which your body cools itself or maintains a comfortable temperature. Sweating occurs mainly under the arms, on the feet and palms. Sweat often mixes with bacteria present on the skin. The bacteria works upon it and produces a typical smell. Bathing regularly can prevent you from such body odor.

What is Hyperhidrosis?

You tend to sweat naturally a lot when you workout, are anxious, have high body temperature and are in a hot environment. Many women experience excessive sweating as they approach menopause. However, sweating too much without the given circumstances is abnormal.
For example: sweating in winter or continuous sweating under normal temperature even when you are not doing any physical work. Such a medical condition is called hyperhidrosis. In Hyperhidrosis the cooling mechanism of ones body is overactive which results in the production of 3 to 4 times more sweat.

Reasons Behind Excessive Sweating

Hyperhidrosis is basically of two types. They are primary and secondary hyperhidrosis. The former type is due to genetic predisposition. It starts during adolescence. It gets aggravated by many conditions and situations. They are nervousness, anxiety, consumption of certain foods, nicotine, caffeine and some smells.
The latter type of hyperhidrosis is caused by thyroid gland malfunctioning, pituitary gland disorders, gout, diabetes mellitus, menopause, low blood sugar levels and several drugs. Hyperhidrosis can also be induced by wearing tight clothing which do not allow some parts of your body like armpit to respire well.

If you don't experience reduction in over sweating with any of the home remedies, you should consider paying a visit to a dermatologist. There are ways by which excessive sweating can be treated effectively. Following is a brief description of some of the methods which are commonly used by doctors.
Oral Medication: The oral medicines which work to ease sweating too much are known as anticholinergics. An example of such a medicine is Rubinol. Most of the anticholinergics are available only with the prescription of a registered medical practitioner. Many cases have been reported wherein long term usage of anticholinergics causes mouth dryness and blurred vision.
Antiperspirants: There are many antiperspirants which are available in the market which block the sweat glands. They should be applied in the night as we sweat comparatively less in the night. These antiperspirants enter the pore and block them from perspiring. You can get them in various forms like glide, stick, spray and roll on.
Iontophoresis: Iontophoresis involves the use of water to restore the normal functioning of the sweat glands. Water is used to conduct a light electric current on your skin. The process is not painful at all. It takes a few sessions to give noticeable result. The number of sessions depends upon the severity of your sweating problem. On an average, it is 2-4 sessions a week.
Liposuction: This method is used to remove the sweat glands. It can be done for a particular area like armpit. Though this method is very useful, talk to the doctor about the side-effects of the process.
Thoracis Sympathectomy: The surgical treatment for excessive sweating is known as thoracis sympathectomy. It involves interruption of the sympathetic nerves responsible for sweating. It is done by inserting a small endoscopic instrument below the armpit. The aim is to destroy the small parts of the nerve which connects the sweat glands.
Thoracis sympathectomy is very effective but at the same time, risky. Medical professionals have to momentarily deflate your lungs to view the nerves clearly. The process also brings certain side-effects such as nerve damage, excessive sweating in other non-operated body parts, and breathing complications.
At times, such problems become permanent. Therefore, consider it as an option only when all other methods fail.
Except oral medication, all other medical treatment methods work on spots of body. They cannot control all the sweat glands or sympathetic nerves to reduce sweating. Therefore, do think of other ways of getting rid of excessive sweating such as using talcum powders and antiperspirants available in the market. They will also get you rid of body odor.
It is always advisable that you discuss your condition with a dermatologist who will give you an in-depth understanding of your own body and the reasons behind sweating too much.
