Twitching Muscles

Rajib Singha
Twitching muscles, in most cases, do not indicate something very severe. However, in some cases, the condition might be a repercussion of an underlying neural disorder. This story provides information on the triggers, symptoms, and remedial options for this condition.
In a layman's language, the twitching of muscles can be interpreted as fine movements, originating in a localized area of any muscle of the body. This condition is medically referred to as muscle fasciculation. The movements are actually muscle contraction and relaxation. The common areas of the body which are affected by this condition include the feet, hands, arms, or legs. However, any part of the body could be affected.

Triggers

Usually, twitching is not really a cause of serious concern. However, this might not be the case all the time, as a nervous disorder may turn out to be the causal factor. Some people may experience fasciculation in legs after performing exercises.
This usually indicates that the workout session has been a rigorous one. However, it would subside gradually. High caffeine intake might also be a contributing factor.
Other common causes may include nutritional deficiency, and side effects of certain medications. These drugs may belong to the class of diuretics, corticosteroids, or estrogens.
Among the underlying medical causes, common ones may include Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), muscle weakness, injury to the nerve that leads to Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA). Muscular dystrophy is also a hereditary condition that is associated with muscle twitches.

Symptoms

The muscle fasciculation mainly feels like abnormal throbbing sensations in the eyelids, calf, or thumb. The sensations tend to be short-lived. They may be accompanied by loss in muscle mass or weakness.

Treatment

Merely taking up relaxation techniques such as yoga, meditation, breathing exercises, etc., are good enough for dealing with the spasms and twitches. All these techniques help de-stress the body, thereby lowering the risk of such disorders. The more relaxed the body is, the less chance it has, to be affected by fasciculations.

Reducing caffeine consumption can also relieve the symptoms. If some medication has been detected to be the real offender, then it is best to opt for an alternative one, after consulting the doctor. Ensure that your diet is balanced and nutritious and is not missing the essential nutrients. Inculcate the habit of performing exercises regularly.
In most cases, the fasciculations are harmless and temporary. These can be easily managed by treatment and lifestyle changes. Medical assistance must be sought, if a person frequently experiences muscle fasciculation.
