It can cause the feet to swell, look disfigured over time, produce pain that is immense - the condition worsening over a period of time. Fungi attack usually the nails and skin, and are known as dermatophytes; they are parasitic in nature, and cause diseases.
The scientific term for nail fungus is onychomycosis, and causes one's nails to thicken, discolor and twist as a deformation. They depend on moist and dark surroundings in order to multiple successfully. If not treated in time, these can lead to some serious ill effects, out of negligence. We'll look through the different ways on how this can happen, and what kinds of fungus occur in humans.

Different Types of Foot Fungus

We dissect and understand the main four categories of toenail fungus types, and find out the different symptoms of an infected toenail.

Candida Nail Infection

This occurs more frequently on the fingernails, more than it would on one's toenails. The yeast that is responsible for this infection is Candida, and is known as the worst kind of fungal infection from the others.
Symptoms:
  • The nail plate detaches itself from the nail bed that is affixed below.
  • Nails turn either green, or yellowish in color.
  • Nails thicken and become deformed.
  • Nails take on an opaque appearance.
  • Nails tend to fold in, becoming swollen and inflamed, something like an ingrown toenail situation, although much worse.

Proximal Subungual Onychomycosis

It isn't a very common infection, but for those who suffer from HIV, this is a known occurrence. The main culprits that bring on this condition are dermatophytes.
Symptoms:
  • The fungus starts to penetrate deep into the layers of the nail, until it has reached the skin surface within, infecting it.
  • The nail pulls away from the proximal nail fold, causing pain.
  • Toe nails turn discolored, sporting a yellowish or white formation near the cuticle.
  • The proximal part of the nail thickens, turns deformed and is crusty in nature.

Distal Subungual Onychomycosis

The organism that brings on this infection is the trichophyton rubrum leading up to what people most commonly experience - athlete's foot.
Symptoms:
  • Here too, the nails turn to colors of green, white, or yellow and in some cases a mixing of all three colors.
  • The tips of the nails are mostly infected, where the fungus appears between the space of the nail tip and toe.
  • Nails turn round and thick textured.
  • Between the nail palate and the nail bed, dry and dead matter build up.
  • The nail palate later starts to move away from the skin beneath it.
  • Only some rare cases involve the feeling of pain.
  • Uneven nail top.

White Superficial Onychomycosis

This foot fungus type of infection is also common among the masses, although this type of infection is fairly easy to cure. The organism that triggers this infection, is called trichophyton mentagrophytes. Toenail fungus remedies in these cases involve the use of medicated topical creams, to rid the fungi from further infecting the toenails.
Symptoms:
  • White spots signal the start of the infection, where a powdery crust takes form over the nail top.
  • White matter formation on the top of the nail, that initially can be rubbed off.
  • Nail top turns crusty and deformed, as if the nail is breaking apart.
