Ratnashri Dutta
Cold feet and extremities can be caused by various reasons. Let's learn more about them.
Cold sensations to the feet can arise from a host of reasons including poor circulation, nervous system disorders, cold exposure, and decreased metabolism.

Causes

Hypothyroidism

Thyroid disorder tends to affect the body's ability to regulate temperatures. Those with hypothyroidism often report feeling cold, especially in the extremities. Symptoms of hypothyroidism can be mild or severe, but are often very subtle. People with a mild form of the condition may not have any symptoms at all.

Cryoglobulins

Our blood contains a large number of proteins which are called cryoglobulins, and these become insoluble when the temperature starts reducing. Due to this, the blood becomes thicker which in turn hinders the free flow of the blood, causing cold extremities.

Frostbite

This occurs when due to extremely low temperatures, the surface of the skin starts freezing. This leads to problem in circulation of blood, and usually occurs in those places which are furthest away from the heart like fingers and toes of our feet.Minor case of frostbite can be treated at home but if it's an extreme case, then medical attention is required.

Raynaud's Syndrome

Raynaud's Syndrome occurs when low temperatures cause the tiny blood vessels of the fingers and toes start to constrict. This leads to the discoloration of the fingers and toes, and even the nails turn brittle owing to poor circulation.

Peripheral Vascular Disease (PVD)

People suffering from diabetes are susceptible to PVD, a disease characterized by poor circulation. However, note that those who are not diabetic, are also at a risk.

Other Causes

Besides these causes, there are some more reasons and they are chronic allergies, smoking, and also deficiency of iron in the body. Sometimes due to allergic reaction, the temperature of the body goes down. Smoking damages the blood vessels which again leads to hindrance in proper circulation of blood.
The deficiency of iron in the blood, especially in women, often affects the generation of heat in the body which causes your hand or feet to turn cold.
There are certain cold feet symptoms that you can check out in order to know what are the exact signs. If your hands and feet becomes very cold then it's best that you visit the doctor for treatment.
